Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, N.Y. - November 25, 2013 - This weekend the Elmira Jackals will give their fans a chance to enjoy some turkey and football in celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday. Two distinctly unique promotions are planned for the home games this Friday and Saturday the club announced today.

"Turkey and football are two hallmarks of Thanksgiving. We're going to incorporate them into our games this weekend in ways that our fans won't forget any time soon," said Jackals and First Arena general manager Matt Hufnagel.

On Friday, November 29 the Jackals take on the Wheeling Nailers at 7:05 p.m. That night the Jackals are going to have their first-ever "Bag A Turkey" contest on the ice. Six live turkeys will be released onto the First Arena ice during the first intermission of Friday's game, and 12 teams of two will compete to catch the live turkeys. Those who do will get a free frozen turkey courtesy of Jubilee Foods. The competitors will be given heavy duty gloves and helmets with facial protection to guard against injury while they try to catch their turkey.

Helping the Jackals select the contestants for the "Bag A Turkey" game are Stevie Swing of 94 Rock and "The Morning Magic" hosts Brian Stoll and Marla Skye on Magic 92.7 FM. Aspiring contestants will have to call in to one of the respective shows during their air time between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. (The Morning Magic) or 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Just Plain Steve) and explain why their team is the best choice to go on to the ice and try to bag a turkey. Stevie, and Stoll and Skye, will select their respective teams during their shows on November 29, and the contestants will all receive complimentary tickets to the Jackals game that night.

The weekend's fun continues on Saturday, November 30 when the Jackals hold a special pregame ceremony to honor the Elmira Express varsity and junior varsity football teams. The varsity team will be recognized for making it all the way to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class AA semifnal which was played Saturday, November 23 at Sahlen's Stadium in Rochester. The Express fought hard but fell 19-6 to the top-ranked Rochester Aquinas team. The future is bright for the Express, though, as the undefeated junior varsity program will also be honored during the pregame ceremony this Saturday.

As part of the celebration in honor of the football teams' successes, the Jackals are offering complimentary tickets to students at Elmira Free Academy and Southside High School. Students can show their student ID card at the First Arena Box Office on Saturday prior to the game in order to receive their free ticket. The offer is valid only for the Saturday, November 30 home game against Cincinnati and cannot be combined with any other offer. For additional information please call the Jackals at 607-734-7825.
