Johnson Throws Gem, Baysox Squeeze Past Trenton, 1-0
June 9, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release
James Johnson allowed just two hits Thursday night in Trenton. A single by JT Stotts in the 3rd inning and a single by Omir Santos in the 9th would be the only offense Johnson would allow through eight plus innings of solid work.
The Baysox collected seven hits off a combination of Phil Hughes and J Brent Cox but only scored once, on two hits in the top of the 2nd inning. Leo Daigle doubled to left field with one out and crossed the plate on a Tripper Johnson RBI single to right field.
Between the Thunder's hits, Johnson retired 16 batters in a row and was in line for his sixth win of the season.
With pinch runner Vince Faison on first base Marino Salas relieved Johnson. JT Stotts sacrificed the speedy Faison to second on a successful bunt and a passed ball by Sandy Madera allowed the runner to advance to third. With one on and one out, Baysox manager Don Werner pulled both his infield and outfield in in order to stave off any attempt of Faison scoring from third on a shallow hit.
The plan worked as Gabe Lopez blooped a soft liner into center field but with Fiorentino playing in he was able to make the catch and get the ball in to Madera forcing Faison to stay at third. Bronson Sardinha then flew out to Noah Hall in left to end the game and ensure Johnson's sixth win and Salas' 13th save of the season.
ON DECK: The Baysox return home from Trenton after snapping a five game losing skid and will face the Binghamton Mets for the first time this season. Game time is set for 7:05 PM at Prince George's Stadium.
