Defenders' bats stay quiet in loss

June 9, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

The Connecticut Defenders dropped their second one run game in a row, managing only 2 hits off of Ronald "Bear" Bay in a 1-0 loss

Pat Misch and Bay had a pitchers duel going from the start. Misch allowed a few Akron base runners early on, but a double play ball in each of the first three innings got him out of trouble. Through the first six innings, the most trouble Bay saw was a walk, and a few loud outs at the beginning of the game. However, going into the bottom of the 6th, the teams were scoreless, and the Defenders hitless.

In the bottom half of the sixth inning Kevin Kouzmanoff, Eastern League player of the month for the month of May, supplied the offense with a solo home run, his 9th of the season. Kouzmanoff entered the evening with a .436 batting average in 165 at bats, and was 1 for 3 on the game with an intentional walk.

In the top of the 7th inning, Clay Timpner broke the no hit bid with a lead of single, but was erased by an Aaron Hornostaj double play ball. The Defenders would get only one more hit off of Bay who went the distance for the complete game shutout. The Defenders never got a runner past first base in the 1-0 loss. With the win, Bay improved to 4-3 with Misch, the hard luck loser fell to 5-3.

The Defenders will try to get back on the winning track tomorrow in game two of the three game set with Akron. Right hand ERA league leader Matt Palmer (4-2) will take the mound for Connecticut against Sean Smith (6-0). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
