Utica Comets News Release

The day after Christmas represents a lot of different things, dependent on whom you ask. For many, it's simply a day of relaxation, a time to spend with family and to unwind from the hectic nature of the holiday season. For the hockey community, however, December 26th is huge as the world's top prospects and youth talent gather together for the annual IIHF World U-20 Championships.

Held this year in Sweden, the World Juniors, as the tournament has come to be known, is a showcase for many young players looking to make their mark on the hockey world. Over 11 days, top prospects from over 10 different countries gather to battle it out for the world's top spot.

Two Utica Comets, Nicklas Jensen and Peter Andersson, represented Denmark and Sweden respectively at the prestigious event during their youth careers. Jensen participated in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 tournaments, while Andersson skated to a Bronze medal in the 2010 edition, held in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Jensen's Under-20 career began in 2010, when he skated in the Division One edition of the tournament. The Dane netted five points (3-2-5) over five games played as Denmark finished three points behind Germany for advancement to the top flight. In his second attempt the following season, Denmark gained promotion as they won their group with 12 points. Jensen again scored five points (2-3-5) as Denmark's 2-1 win over Slovenia gave them the group title on a head-to-head tie-breaker.

Jensen saved his finest performance for the elite stage as he logged six points (2-4-6) over six games played in 2012. The winger picked up two assists against the United States and one against bronze medal winning Canada. Jensen scored both of his goals against Switzerland in the relegation round, but his team was sent back to Division One for the following season.

Andersson is the only current Comet player to medal at the World Juniors, with a bronze medal at the 2010 games. The big defenseman played a big role in Sweden's bronze medal performance, as he ended with three assists. Andersson netted a helper in a 7-3 group stage win over Austria, as Sweden rolled to an undefeated record and a berth to the semi-finals.

Despite Sweden dropping a 5-2 decision against the United States, Andersson picked up an assist on Anton Lander's goal, which knotted the score at one midway through the second period. Andersson found the scoresheet one final time, in the Bronze Medal game against Switzerland, with an assist on the team's fourth goal in an 11-4 victory.
