State College Spikes News Release

AUBURN, NY - Mike Jefferson rebounded from allowing a first-inning home run to strike out a career-high six batters over five innings, but the State College Spikes ended up on the short end of a 5-0 score against the Auburn Doubledays on Sunday night at Falcon Park.

Jefferson (2-2) yielded a two-run homer to Auburn (38-23) first baseman Justin Miller to open the scoring, but allowed only one hit after that. The left-hander notched 11 consecutive outs to end his evening on the mound, allowing a total of two hits and a walk on the night. Sunday also marked Jefferson's second straight five-inning outing, matching the longest of his career.

State College (23-38) was shut out for the first time since July 16, though, despite out-hitting the Doubledays, 6-5. Dan Gamache was the lone Spike to produce a multi-hit game, stroking a pair of solid singles back through the box in his first two at-bats.

Auburn finished the scoring in the eighth inning, adding three runs with two outs. A wild third strike to Billy Burns enabled Connor Rowe to score, and after a walk, Matt Skole became the first player in the New York-Penn League to reach 40 runs batted in with a two-run single.

The game's start was delayed an hour and two minutes to get the field prepared after heavy rain passed through the Auburn area Sunday afternoon.

Jordan Cooper went 2 2/3 innings in middle relief for State College, retiring the first six batters he faced before the Doubledays' three-run eighth inning. Cooper struck out three Auburn batters on the night.

Brian Dupra (4-3) started and earned the victory for the Doubledays, yielding four hits and striking out four over five innings of work. It was Dupra's second victory over the Spikes this season after the right-hander pitched four scoreless relief innings in a July 3 win at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Miller and Rowe each ended up with multiple hits for Auburn, with Rowe adding a double.

Monday, the Spikes complete their six-game road trip with the last game of a three-game set against the Doubledays at Falcon Park. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will feature right-hander Nick Kingham (3-2) on the mound for State College. Kingham went five innings for the win against Hudson Valley on Wednesday. In each of his last seven starts, the Pirates' 2010 fourth-round draft pick has gone five innings or more while allowing one run or less. Auburn will go with right-hander Manny Rodriguez (2-2) on the hill.

The Spikes return home on Tuesday, August 23 to start a six-game homestand with a 7:05 matchup against the Jamestown Jammers (Florida Marlins).
