Aberdeen IronBirds Game Notes

Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Today's Game
The Aberdeen IronBirds look to snap a four-game losing streak today as they take on the Connecticut Tigers (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Detrot Tigers) in game two of a three-game series at Dodd Stadium. Aberdeen dropped the opener of the series by a final score of 4-3. The IronBirds pulled to within a run in the ninth inning and had the tying run at first, but couldn't push him across. Today, the IronBirds will have right-hander Angel Cespedes on the hill. Cespedes, who was a starter last year for the Rookie-Advanced Bluefield Orioles, is making his first start of the 2011 season. He'll go up against fellow right-hander Tommy Collier.
Great Relief
When IronBirds starting pitcher Jose Mota couldn't make it out of the third inning on Saturday night, it looked like it would be a long night for the IronBirds. Instead, Zach Fowler and Travis Strong combined to toss 5.2 shutout innings. The two relievers combined to allow just one hit and two walks.
Davis Finds His Swing
IronBirds catcher Adam Davis had three hits, two doubles, and two runs scored in last night's loss to the Tigers. Davis, who was the Baltimore Orioles' 11th round pick in this year's draft, is now batting .333 in six August games.
Eliminated
With last night's loss, the IronBirds were officially eliminated from first-place contention in the McNamara Division. Aberdeen currently trails the Staten Island Yankees by 17 games with just 16 left to play. An IronBirds loss today or a Williamsport Crosscutters win would officially eliminate Aberdeen from Wild Card contention as well.
Zrenda Plays in Front of Home Crowd
Infielder Ryan Zrenda got the start for the IronBirds at DH in last night's loss. Zrenda is from Old Lyme, CT and is playing in front of a host of family and friends. He went 1-for-4 last night, with an RBI-double and a run scored. The double was his first professional hit.
Day Games
This is just the third afternoon game the IronBirds have played this year. Aberdeen is 1-1 in games played under daylight. They won at the Vermont Lake Monsters, and lost at home against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
