NYPL Auburn Doubledays

Eighth Inning Flurry Lifts Auburn over State College

Auburn Doubledays News Release

Auburn, NY - Leading 2-0 in the eighth, the Auburn Doubledays still couldn't sit comfortably. The State College pitchers had retired seventeen straight Auburn batters and were just a bloop and a blast away from tying the game at Falcon Park.

Bottom line: the Doubledays needed insurance.

In the eighth inning, they found some.

After leading off the inning by singling to centerfield, Connor Rowe stole second base and went to third on a throwing error by Spikes catcher Matt Skirving, giving Auburn a run-scoring chance.

Two outs later, Rowe was still at third as Billy Burns came to the plate. With two strikes against him, Burns swung and missed for strike three. Instead of ending the inning there, the pitch was wild and got to the backstop, allowing Burns to reach first and Rowe to score from third.

Then, things got fun.

Burns stole second. Ortega walked. Burns stole third and Ortega stole second, putting two men in scoring position for Matt Skole. Skole delivered, lining a hit through the right side, plating both runners and putting Auburn up 5-0.

Richie Mirowski worked the ninth for the Doubledays, securing a 5-0 win for Auburn.

With the win, the Doubledays remain tied for the best record in the league with Staten Island, both teams now fifteen games over .500.

Offensively, Auburn was led by Justin Miller, who blasted his team-leading fifth home run of the season over the wall in leftfield in the first inning. Miller finished 2 for 4 at the plate as did Connor Rowe, who also drove in a run.

Brian Dupra got the win, tossing five innings of scoreless baseball and increasing the Doubledays starting pitching scoreless innings streak to twenty, dating back to Wirkin Estevez's win in game one on Friday.

Auburn will go for the three-game sweep of State College on Monday in a 7:05pm first pitch at Falcon Park. For tickets, please visit www.auburndoubledays.com.
