Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

NORWICH, CT - After seeing the Aberdeen IronBirds tie to game at 1 in the top of the seventh inning, the Connecticut Tigers' hitters woke up their bats for the bottom half of the inning. The Tigers batted around, scoring 4 runs on 3 hits, which gave the home team a 5-1 victory over Aberdeen, their 5th straight win.

IronBirds reliever Matthew Drummond plunked designated hitter Dean Green to lead off the inning. Aaron Westlake and Jeff Holm followed with singles to load the bases. Drummond struck out Tigers' catcher Zach Maggard for the first out and just needed a double play to escape the jam. Drummond got his ground ball, but the IronBirds' defense failed him. Connor Narron, manning the hot corner for Aberdeen on the warm Sunday afternoon mishandled Matt Perry's ground ball for an error. With right handed swinging batter Javier Azcona coming to bat IronBirds manager Leo Nunez made a pitching change; replacing the lefty Drummond with right hander Zach Petersime.

No matter who was on the hill, Aberdeen's defense was still sleeping this inning. Azcona grounded the first pitch to Narron, but again Narron made a fielding error. This allowed Westlake and Holm to come around and score.

It was not just Narron who made defensive miscues in the bottom of the 7th for the IronBirds.

Tigers' leadoff batter P.J. Polk hit a ground ball of shortstop Mychal Givens, whose attempt at forcing Azcona resulted in another error. Givens booted Polk's ground ball, allowing the bases to be loaded. Petersime was able to get out of the jam unscathed after that though.

Tigers' reliever Jeff Barfield had a tremendous performance out of the pen. Barfield got out a bases loaded nobody out jam in the top half of the seventh with only one IronBird crossing the plate. The Perry, GA resident got Glynn Davis, the IronBirds' centerfielder and New York- Penn League AllStar, to fly into a sacrifice double play. Davis hit a sacrifice fly to center, but Westlake was able to cut off Polk's relay throw in time to get Dudley Leonora caught in a run down and tagged out 8-3-5-4. Barfield then got outfielder Martin Serrata to ground to short to end the inning.

Barfield picked up the win, his second of the season, throwing 3 innings of one hit ball today. The Tigers and IronBirds play again tomorrow night at Dodd Stadium. First pitch of the final game of the three game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
