New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats of the Eastern League made a roster move today involving a Catcher.
Jair Fernandez, a 24-year old Catcher from Cartagena, Colombia who appeared in twenty-five games for the 2011 Rock Cats, has been promoted to Rochester in the International League. The 6'1"/205-pound backstop began the current season on the Disabled List with a leg injury. He joined New Britain on May 31st and batted .205 with 3 Doubles, 1 HR and 11 RBI. He was first advanced to Triple-A Rochester in late June and proceeded to hit .241 for the Red Wings in 10 game appearances. He rejoined New Britain on June 10th and has been with the Rock Cats since.
Obtained by Minnesota in a 2008 trade with Seattle, Fernandez is now in his 8th season of professional ball. He made his Eastern League debut with the Rock Cats in 2010 and, over 55 games, hit a solid .267 in New Britain.
