Akron RubberDucks News Release
BOWIE, MD - Left-handed pitcher Matt Packer allowed six runs over the first three innings as the Akron Aeros fell to the Bowie Baysox 7-3 in the rubber match of a three-game series Wednesday at Prince George's Stadium.
Packer suffered the loss for Akron pitching six innings, giving up nine hits, walking three and striking out two.
With the loss, the Aeros (66-64) have fallen five and a half games back of Bowie for the Western Divison Wild Card spot and seven games back of first place Harrisburg with 12 games to play.
Right-handed pitcher Zach Clark earned the win for Bowie lasting five innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits, walking four and striking out two.
In the bottom of the first inning, Joe Mahoney rapped a two-RBI double to left field to give the Baysox (71-58) a 2-0 lead. Brandon Waring followed with a two-run home run to make it 4-0.
Ronnie Welty hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to increase the lead to 5-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Baysox took a 6-0 lead on a Waring RBI double.
The Aeros rallied in the top of the fifth inning. Michel Hernandez led off with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 6-1. Kyle Bellows singled and advanced to third on a Raul Padron double. Donnie Webb followed with an RBI single scoring Bellows and cutting the Baysox lead to 6-2. Padron scored when Cristo Arnal grounded into a double play to make it 6-3.
That was as close as Akron would get as Bowie tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh inning and went on to the win.
The Aeros begin an eight-game homestand on Thursday with the first of a four-game series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Akron will give the ball to right-handed pitcher Brett Brach, who is 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA in 2011.
