PENSACOLA SWEEPS TWIN BILL WITH SHRIMP

The Blue Wahoos broomed Jacksonville 2-0 and 11-4 in Thursday's doubleheader. In the opener, Michael Davis homered in the second inning and Jaylin Davis scored on an error in the third for the contest's only runs. The finale saw Pensacola strike first again, with Travis Blankenhorn scoring on a wild pitch in the first inning before lifting a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 in the second. Justin Twine notched an RBI single in the fourth before racing in to score on a passed ball that equaled the tally at two. However, the Blue Wahoos collected four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to take an 11-2 lead. Twine doubled in a run in the sixth and Bryson Brigman singled in another to get the score to 11-4.

IT HAPPENED AGAIN

Jacksonville suffered a 2-0 defeat in game one of Thursday's doubleheader in Pensacola, the Southern League-high 16th time the club has been shut out this season. Those 16 blankings are double that of Mobile's eight, which is the next-closest squad in the circuit. They also equal the 16 zeroes the Jumbo Shrimp endured all of last season, which was the most in the league since Jackson tallied 21 zeroes in 2015. In addition, Jacksonville is also just nine shutouts away from tying the league record of 25 set by Asheville in 1970.

STAINLESS STEAL

Jumbo Shrimp catchers have been a crucial element to a strong defense throughout the 2019 season. The club's backstops have caught 35 men stealing, the second-highest total in Double-A and tied for the fifth-best mark in all of Minor League Baseball. Jacksonville's 43.2 percent caught stealing rate ranks fourth in Double-A.

WE DIDN'T START THE FIRE

In the first 20 games of the season, Jacksonville starting pitchers compiled a 3-13 record and 5.44 ERA over 91.0 innings. Jumbo Shrimp lid-lifters combined for 49 walks (4.8 BB/9), 89 strikeouts (8.8 K/9) and 91 hits allowed (9.0 H/9). However, the Jumbo Shrimp have seen some stellar starting pitching over the last 40 games. During this stretch, Jacksonville starters have combined for a 2.79 ERA (72 ER in 232.0 IP). Jumbo Shrimp starters have walked 65 (2.5 BB/9), fanned 190 (7.4 K/9) and yielded 190 hits (7.4 H/9).

DON'T BE SAD IT'S OVER; SMILE IT HAPPENED

Jacksonville outfielder Brian Miller saw his 16-game hitting streak, the best run in all of Double-A this season, come to an end in game one of Thursday's doubleheader in Pensacola. Still, the Raleigh, N.C., native has collected at least one hit in 17 of the last 18 games, going 27-for-72 (.375/.423/.458) with four doubles, one triple, nine RBIs and six walks during this span. On the season, Miller ranks in a tie for third in the Southern League with 59 hits. The former North Carolina Tar Heel is pulling the ball at a career-high 47.9 percent clip while going the opposite way a career-low 19.9 percent of the time, the fourth-lowest such mark of the 123 Southern League hitters with at least 70 plate appearances this year.

FORTUNE FAVORS THE BOLD (CITY)?

Throughout every level in the history of baseball, nearly every team can expect to go about .500 in games decided by one or two runs. However, the Jumbo Shrimp have gone a combined 8-23 (.258) in games determined by two runs or fewer, including a stunning 0-11 in contests decided by precisely two tallies. In fact, Jacksonville has lost five of their last six affairs decided by no more than two runs. Not helping matters is the club has also not performed well in "blowout games," which are decided by at least five runs. The Jumbo Shrimp are 2-11 in those blowout situations.

HEY NOW, THEY ARE ALL-STARS

Four Jacksonville players were named Southern League Midseason All-Stars Robert Dugger and Cody Poteet were honored among the Jumbo Shrimp's pitching staff, with the club boasting two position player selections in Brian Miller and Justin Twine. Dugger ranks third in the league in innings (65.2), tied for third in wins (three), fifth in strikeouts (68), sixth in WHIP (1.07) and eighth in batting average against (.213). The right-hander has ceded just 51 hits and 19 walks while registering a 3.29 ERA. Poteet has gone 3-3 with a 2.67 ERA, a figure that places ninth in the circuit. He also ranks eighth in WHIP (1.10). Miller has collected 59 hits this season, tied for the third-most in the Southern League. The Raleigh, N.C., native is batting .288/.339/.380 with 10 doubles, three triples, one homer and 25 RBIs. Twine is slashing .254/.294/.327 with six doubles, three triples, one home run and 23 RBIs.
