Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals have taken points in each of the first five games of the 2010-2011 season and enter the ECHL's third week coming off of a sweep of the Reading Royals on the road, 7-2 and 3-2.
The Jackals have a six-point lead in the Atlantic Division and are tied atop the Eastern Conference with the Wheeling Nailers at eight points.
Last season, Elmira was also unbeaten through its first five games on the way to a seven-game winning streak to start the 2009-2010 campaign.
Jackals coach Malcolm Cameron holds the ECHL record for the longest regulation unbeaten streak. In 2007-2008, his Texas Wildcatters earned at least a point in 23-straight games, with a record of 18-0-5 during that span.
THIS PAST WEEKEND
After dropping Friday's game in overtime to Wheeling, 3-2, at First Arena, the Jackals combined their offensive ability with their defensive prowess in their two games against the Royals this weekend.
In Saturday's 7-2 win, Elmira recorded its second five-goal period of the season, breaking open a tie game in the third with an offensive barrage that gave the Jackals a five-goal victory. Seven Jackals had multi-point games while six different players scored goals in the win. Goaltender Marco Cousineau stopped 28 of 30 Royals shots for his second-career victory.
Elmira's defense stepped up to the challenge on Sunday, limiting Reading to 17 shots on Cousineau and preserving a one-goal advantage late in the game to win back-to-back contests for the first time this year.
LEADING THE WAY
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the Jackals regulation unbeaten streak to start the year is that they have trailed in a game for just 22 seconds. After the Nailers gave the Jackals their first deficit of the season on Friday, Justin Donati responded moments later with a third-period goal to tie the game, 2-2.
STAR-STUDDED SHOWDOWN AWAITS
The Jackals host the Gwinnett Gladiators on Saturday at 7:35 p.m. and the game will feature the ECHL's top early-season performers. Elmira and Gwinnett hold the league's five leading scorers as of this moment. Jackals forward Michael Dubuc is tied with Gladiators rookie forward Aaron Bendickson for the league lead with nine points. Elmira's Justin Donati, Brock McBride, and Yannick Tifu are tied for third in the ECHL with eight points along with Gwinnett's Derek Nesbitt. McBride has a league-best five-game scoring streak to start the season.
The Gladiators have not lost in regulation either, with a 3-0-0-1 record through two weeks. Gwinnett heads to Trenton for games on Thursday and Friday against the Devils before its game in Elmira on Saturday.
