Gladiators Open Season With Four-Game Unbeaten Streak

With a pair of wins over the weekend, the Gwinnett Gladiators stretched their season opening unbeaten streak to four games, and lead the ECHL's South Division with seven points (3-0-1 record).

The Gladiators opened their home schedule on Friday with a 6-2 win over South Carolina in front of 10,076 fans at The Arena at Gwinnett Center. Derek Nesbitt registered a hat trick and added an assist as part of a +5 effort, while rookie Aaron Bendickson assisted on four of Gwinnett's six goals. Chris Carrozzi turned aside 26 Stingrays' shots to record his first professional win.

On Saturday, Nesbitt got the Gladiators off to a quick start scoring just 15 seconds into a 5-2 win over Florida. It was the first of two goals on the night for Nesbitt, who is in his third stint with Gwinnett. Ryan Garbutt helped the Gladiators' cause with three points (1g-2a), his second three-point night in the last three games. Carrozzi was once again strong in net stopping 32 Everblades' shots.

Bendickson is tied for the overall league lead with nine points (2g-7a), which leads all ECHL rookies through two weeks. Nesbitt is right behind him with eight points (5g-3a). Carrozzi is third among goaltenders with a 1.95 goals-against average and fifth with a .934 save percentage.

Gwinnett travels north for three games this week, visiting Trenton on Thursday and Friday and Elmira on Saturday before returning home next Monday to host South Carolina.

Big Crowds In Gwinnett And Ontario Highlight ECHL's Second Week

Seven ECHL teams hosted their home openers over the weekend. The Greenville Road Warriors welcomed professional hockey back to BI-LO Center on Thursday as 4,576 fans saw the team defeat Florida 4-1 for its first win.

The Gwinnett Gladiators welcomed 10,076 fans to The Arena at Gwinnett Center on Friday for its home opener, an increase of over 3,500 from last season's opener. It is the largest home opening crowd in the team's eight years, surpassing the 7,027 fans from 2007-08. Utah had 5,228 for its opener on Friday while Las Vegas had 3,856.

Ontario, which led the ECHL in 2009-10 with 6,451 per game, started strong on Saturday as a sold-out crowd of 9,592, the most for a home opener in the team's three seasons, was at Citizens Business Bank Arena for its opener against Stockton. Kalamazoo had 4,772 at Wings Stadium on Saturday for its opener against Cincinnati while Reading had 5,207 on Saturday for its opener against Elmira.

Two more ECHL teams open at home this week with Victoria hosting Ontario on Wednesday and Cincinnati raising its 2010 Kelly Cup championship banner on Saturday against Wheeling. South Carolina is the final ECHL team to open at home on Nov. 5 against Florida.

Divisions

Atlantic Division

Elmira Jackals - The Jackals are unbeaten in regulation through their first five games for the second straight season.

- Michael Dubuc is tied for the league lead with nine points (6g-3a).

- The Jackals host Gwinnett on Saturday.

Reading Royals

- The Royals have scored at least one power play goal in each of four games.

- Ryan Cruthers scored his team leading fourth goal on Sunday.

- Reading plays at Wheeling on Thursday and Friday and at Toledo on Saturday.

Trenton Devils

- Trenton's penalty kill stopped all eight Wheeling power play chances on Sunday.

- Trevor Kell leads the team in scoring with seven points (3g-4a).

- The Devils host Gwinnett Thursday and Friday.

North Division

Cincinnati Cyclones - The Cyclones played in their third consecutive overtime game for the first time since 2006.

- Dylan Hunter is on a four game point scoring streak (1g-6a).

- The Cyclones play Friday at Toledo and host Wheeling on Saturday.

Kalamazoo Wings

- Kalamazoo has scored 7 of their 14 goals with special teams (6 pp, 1 sh).

- Goaltender Ryan Nie won his 100th career game on Friday against Toledo.

- Kalamazoo plays at Florida Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Toledo Walleye

- The Walleye have scored four of their six goals in the first period.

- Randy Rowe leads the team with 3 points (2g-1a).

- Toledo hosts Cincinnati on Friday and Reading on Saturday.

Wheeling Nailers

- The Nailers are tied for first in the overall standings in the ECHL, with a record of 4-1-0 for eight points.

- Andrew Lord finished the weekend with five points (2g, 3a).

- Wheeling hosts Reading on Thursday and Friday and plays at Cincinnati on Saturday.

South Division

Florida Everblades - The Everblades killed eight of eleven penalties last week.

- Alex Imbeault is currently on a four-game point scoring streak (6g-1a).

- Florida hosts Kalamazoo on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Greenville Road Warriors

- The Road Warriors have been shorthanded a league low 13 times.

- Andrew Carroll is on a two game point scoring streak (3g, 1a).

- Greenville hosts South Carolina on Friday and Saturday.

Gwinnett Gladiators

- The Gladiators win on Friday improves their record to 6-0-2 all time in home openers.

- Goaltender Chris Carrozzi ranks third in the league in goals against average (1.95).

- Gwinnett is at Trenton on Thursday and Friday and at Elmira on Saturday.

South Carolina Stingrays

- Nikita Kashirsky leads the team with three goals.

- South Carolina is third in the league with 27.50 shots against per game.

- Stingrays are at Greenville on Friday and Saturday.

Mountain Division

Alaska Aces - Brian Swanson leads the team with seven points (4g-3a).

- Aces lead the league with 37.50 shots per game.

- Alaska is at Las Vegas on Friday and Bakersfield on Saturday.

Idaho Steelheads

- Mark Derlago has a four game point scoring streak and leads the team in goals (4g).

- Idaho is fifth on the penalty kill at 85.7 percent.

- Steelheads host Utah on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Utah Grizzlies

- Utah went 4-for-8 on the power-play on Saturday.

- Brad Snetsinger leads the team with seven points (3g-4a).

- The Grizzlies are at Idaho on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Victoria Salmon Kings

- Milan Gajic leads the team with three goals.

- Riley Gill leads the league with a 0.50 goals against average and a save percentage of .985.

- Victoria hosts Ontario Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Pacific Division

Bakersfield Condors - Stephane Goulet leads the Condors with three goals.

- Condors have scored first in each of their three games.

- Bakersfield is at Las Vegas on Thursday and hosts Stockton on Friday and Alaska on Saturday.

Las Vegas Wranglers

- The Wranglers are tied for first in the league on the penalty kill at 100 percent.

- Jamie Bates leads the team with four points (0g-4a).

- Las Vegas hosts Bakersfield on Thursday and Alaska on Friday.

Ontario Reign

- Jeff Corey is on a four-game point streak and leads the team with six points (3g-3a).

- Matt Delahey is tied for third among ECHL rookies with three assists.

- Ontario is at Victoria on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Stockton Thunder

- Chris D'Alvise leads the team in with six points (1g-5a).

- Tyson Sexsmith is second in the ECHL with 99 saves. - The Thunder are at Bakersfield on Friday.
