* The Jackals face the Brampton Beast in a home-and-home series this weekend, making it four straight matches with the Beast over two weeks. * Froward Greg Betzold scored his first professional goal in Saturday's loss to Brampton. * Defenseman Brycen Martin recorded the first two points, both assists, of his professional career Saturday against Brampton. * The Jackals penalty kill is 16-for-18 (88.9%) over the last six games. Week in Review More firsts Jackals rookie forward Greg Betzold scored his first professional goal Saturday against the Brampton Beast. The goal, coming in his second game with the Jackals and fourth professional game, came on a shot from the right circle, as he used the defensman as a screen. It was also the first professional point for the Cincinnati, Ohio native, who the Jackals signed on Nov. 10. Betzold is the fourth Jackal to score his first ECHL goal this season. Kyle Rankin scored his first goal Nov. 6 in South Carolina on a 4-on-3 power play. Rookie forward Charlie Mosey scored his first ECHL goal in his first ECHL game in the season opener Oct. 15 in Reading. That was the first goal of the season for the Jackals. Rookie defenseman Paul Geiger scored his first ECHL goal in his league debut Oct. 21 vs. Norfolk. He spent just two games in Elmira before being recalled by the Rochester Americans. Defenseman Brycen Martin picked up two assists, his first two pro points, in Saturday's loss to Brampton. Home sweet home Last week's two games against Brampton started a stretch in which the Jackals play eight of nine games at First Arena, through Dec. 2. After this Friday's match in Brampton, the Jackals will play six straight home games. During this stretch, the Jackals face Brampton once more (Nov. 19), Reading once (Nov. 25), Manchester twice (Nov. 26-27) and Kalamazoo twice (Nov. 30 & Dec. 2). They are 1-4-0-0 at home to begin the season. Game 10: Beast take down Jackals on Veterans Night The Brampton Beast scored twice in the third period to defeat the Jackals, 4-2, Nov. 11 at First Arena in the first game of back-to-back meetings between the teams. The Jackals scored first for the third time in the last four games, with Daultan Leveille scoring on a breakaway at 8:42 of the first period, giving the Jackals a 1-0 lead. In the second, the Beast scored twice to grab a 2-1 lead with Mike Vernace getting the first at 3:28 and David Pacan getting the second at 12:51. The Jackals pulled even again late in the second as Charlie Mosey swept in a rebound of a Leveille shot at 17:17, sending the game to the third tied at two. Brampton broke the third-period tie at 5:03 as Luc-Olivier Blain scored on Andy Iles to make it 3-2 Beast. They added an empty-net goal at 19:30 by Yannick Veilleux to give the Beast a 4-2 win. Game 11: Quick strikes lead Brampton past Elmira The Brampton Beast scored three second-period goals and used that to propel past the Jackals, 4-2, Nov. 12 at First Arena, sweeping back-to-back games in Elmira. The Beast opened the scoring late in the first period, with Garrett Clarke hammering home a rebound from near the wall at the left circle with 1:16 to play in the first period. The rest of the offense in the game came in the second period. The Beast grabbed a 2-0 lead with Connor Crisp getting credit for a goal in the slot at 3:21 of the second. Just over a minute later, Sebastien Sylvestre pulled Elmira back within one, finishing off his own rebound a 4:42 to make it 2-1. Brampton would score twice more in a span on 1:12 to go up 4-1 before the Jackals began to ramp up the pressure. They got withing two at 11:10 on Greg Betzold's first pro goal, coming off a screened shot from the right circle. The Jackals would end up with 29 shots over the final two periods, but Bryan Pitton preserved the Beast lead to give Brampton the 4-2 win. Week Ahead Game 12: Fri., Nov. 18 at Brampton Beast, 7:15 p.m. Game 13: Sat., Nov. 19 vs. Brampton Beast, 7:05 p.m. - D3 Night The Jackals continue their four game series with the Brampton Beast as the teams play a home-and-home, starting Friday in Brampton. The teams will finish the weekend at First Arena Saturday night for D3 Night. Overall, the teams will meet nine times in 2016-17. The Beast have points in eight of their first 10 games, posting a 5-2-1-2 record. That gives them 13 points and places Brampton fifth in the North Division. They are tied in points with Wheeling, but lost to the Nailers, 5-2, to snap a three-game winning streak. The Beast open this week with a morning game in Wheeling Tuesday before playing the Jackals twice this weekend. Brampton dropped to third in the league in goals per game at 3.90, only behind Toledo (4.08) and Atlanta (3.93). However, they still rank 26th in the ECHL in goals against, allowing 4.00 goals per game, only ahead of Rapid City. Forwards David Pacan (5g, 8a) and Brandon Marino (3g, 10a) lead the Beast in scoring with 13 points. They both had eight-game scoring streaks snapped in Sunday's loss to Wheeling. Yannick Veilleux is third on the team with 11 points (4g, 7a), including four points in two games against the Jackals. In goal, Zach Fucale and Bryan Pitton have split time for the Beast. Fucale, a 2nd round draft choice by Montreal in 2013, is 2-2-0-0 in four appearances with a 3.48 goals-against average and an .864 save percentage. He earned the win last Friday against the Jackals. Pitton, a 2006 5th round draft pick by the Edmonton Oilers, is 2-0-0-2 in four appearances and has a 3.55 goals-against average and a .880 save percentage. He stopped 33 of 35 shots in Saturday's win over the Jackals.
