Elmira, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals (34-21-2-2) produced a season-high 48 shots on Friday night at First Arena, peppering goaltender Mark Owuya consistently throughout the contest but falling to the Reading Royals (27-24-3-4), 3-1.

Mikael Bedard buried a snap shot from the right circle with Reading on a five-on-three power play, giving the Royals a 1-0 advantage at 4:25 of the opening period.

Reading extended its lead to 2-0 at 4:01 of the second period, as Kenny Ryan finished off a breakaway by beating Timo Pielmeier glove side to increase the Royals' advantage to two goals.

John Kurtz put the Jackals on the board at 16:50 of the second period, pushing home a loose puck on the doorstep to reduce Reading's lead to 2-1.

Despite Elmira pelting Owuya with 19 shots in the third period, the Royals held off the Jackals late. Bedard sealed the contest with an empty-net goal at 19:18, giving Reading the 3-1 win.

Pielmeier (13-10-1-2) made 20 saves on 22 shots in the defeat. Owuya (8-1-2-1) made 47 saves in his first start with Reading since Jan. 6. The Sweden native had been with the AHL's Toronto Marlies for the past two months.
