Wheeling Nailers News Release

TOLEDO, OH- The Wheeling Nailers picked up their 70th point of the season on Friday night, as they visited the Toledo Walleye. Unfortunately, they were unable to come away with a pair of points, as Joey Martin's tally in the fifth round of the shootout lifted the Walleye to a 3-2 victory at Huntington Center.

The Walleye received an early power play in the first period, and were able to capitalize, as they started the scoring. Peter Delmas made a solid stop off of a backhand try by Todd Griffith, but the rebound kicked out to Harrison Reed, who put the puck back into the net. The Nailers evened the score midway through the frame. Chris Barton dumped the puck into the left corner, where Paul Crowder was able to chase it down, beating a defender. The Wheeling captain then turned to find Matt Schepke, who scored with a shot from the left circle.

Both teams put one goal on the scoreboard in the second period as well. Wheeling took its first lead of the contest at the 7:44 mark of the middle frame. Joey Ryan had his shot blocked by Cody Chupp, who ended up heading the other direction on a breakaway. Chupp kept the puck on his forehand, flipping a wrist shot high over Thomas McCollum's glove. Toledo tied the game later in the period, shortly after killing a penalty. David Toews and Todd Griffith combined to connect with Bryan Rufenach on a quick passing play, with Rufenach getting the goal on a high wrist shot.

Neither team was able to light the lamp in the third period or overtime, as the contest progressed to a shootout. After a missed attempt by David Gilbert, Chris Barton gave the Nailers the lead in round one. However, that lead was erased on the next shot by Andrej Nestrasil, as the shootout was tied at one after two rounds. It ended up staying that way until the fifth and final round, when Joey Martin put the Walleye on top, before Denver Manderson's backhander went wide, as Toledo came away with the bonus point.

Thomas McCollum earned the win in goal for the Walleye, stopping 34 of the 36 shots he faced during the game, before making four saves in the shootout. Peter Delmas was saddled with the shootout loss, after making 22 saves on 24 shots during the game, and three saves in the shootout.

The Nailers will travel to Cincinnati on Saturday night, where they will face the Cyclones at 7:35.
