Elmira Jackals News Release
Reading, Pa. - The Elmira Jackals extended their perfect shootout record in 2011-2012 to 6-0 on Wednesday night at the Sovereign Center, coming back to earn a 4-3 victory over the Reading Royals. Jackals goaltender Brian Stewart made three saves in the shootout and is now 24/24 in six-career ECHL shootouts, including a 19/19 mark in five this season.
Kyle Reeds redirected a one-timer from Mario Larocque past Reading goaltender Mark Owuya as Elmira converted on the power play, giving the Jackals a 1-0 lead at 10:18. The tally was Reeds' first since Nov. 15.
After a Matt Schepke shot was blocked to the right circle, Todd Griffith fired a puck home into a gaping net to tie the game at 19:53, 1-1.
Yannick Riendeau lifted a puck over Brian Stewart from the slot at 10:50 of the second as a Royals' power play came to an end, giving Reading its first lead, 2-1.
Jack Downing snapped a puck from the right circle over the stick of Owuya at 12:25, tying the game back up, 2-2.
Rob Kwiet fired a puck in from the right circle, beating Stewart high, glove side at 18:29 on the power play to give the Royals the advantage again, 3-2, late in the second.
Louie Caporusso sent the game to overtime when he wristed a puck from the slot past Owuya's stick at 11:39, tying the game 3-3.
After a scoreless sudden-death period, Dustin Gazley snapped a puck past Owuya, Jack Downing backhanded a puck in, and Mike Radja ended the shootout with a quick shot that snuck inside the left post. Stewart set aside attempts by Reading's Riendeau, Yannick Tifu, and Ryan Cruthers, making saves on all three shooters.
With the victory, Stewart improved to 11-5-0-0, making 36 saves on 39 shots in regulation and overtime. Owuya dropped to 5-1-2-1 with a 33-save outing.
