Elmira Jackals News Release

Week 12 Game Results:

1/6/05 Elmira 2 @ Adirondack 1 Shootout (3-1)

Glens Falls, NY - The Elmira Jackals earned some justice with a 2-1 shootout victory of the Adirondack Frostbite Friday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Seven days after losing to Adirondack in a shootout in Glens Falls, the Jackals got their just revenge, beating the Frostbite soundly in the shootout to earn their second straight win. Both teams came out firing the first period, but the goaltenders held the game scoreless.

In the second period Jason Sessa snapped a twisted wrist shot past the blocker of Derek Gustafson to give Elmira the lead at 5:40 of the second period. Carl Drakensjo and Trevor Burgess earned the assists on Sessa's 7th goal in his 11th game for Elmira.

But Adirondack would not go quietly in their own building. After failing to score on a power play to start the third period, Adirondack got another power play just after the five-minute mark. Rookie Kevin Watters took advantage of the opportunity and tied the score at 6:34 with a power play goal from Scott Drevitch and Blue Bennefield. Elmira then turned on the pressure and nearly regained the lead numerous times, but they were denied once by the crossbar and several times on big saves from Gustafson. At the other end Ryan McIntosh made three big saves in the final six minutes to help the game into the shootout.

In the shootout Elmira wasted no time taking the lead when Konstantin Kalmikov snapped a shot past Gustafson for a 1-0 lead. Frostbite forward Mark Hutubise tied the game with a nifty move in the bottom of the round, but then the Jackals pulled away. Jarrett Konkle went top shelf over the glove in round two for a 2-1 lead, then McIntosh made a big save on Watters to keep him out of the net. Both Sessa and Sylvain Cloutier failed to score in the third round due to a great save by Gustafson and Cloutier missing the net completely.

Then, with a one goal lead, Jackals Head Coach Perry Florio threw a curveball. He selected Josh Piro for the fourth round, even though Piro had yet to take at shootout attempt this season. Piro did not disappoint his coach, pulling the puck around the poke-check from Gustafson before tucking it under the glove for a 3-1 Elmira lead in the shootout. The Frostbite, needing to score to stay alive in the overtime session, sent out Mike Berry who had only missed once in shootouts this year. Ryan McIntosh was not fooled by Berry's moves and stoned him on the far post to earn the two-points and send Elmira home victorious.

Ryan McIntosh earned his 5th win of the season, and Elmira's first against Adirondack this year, by making 27 saves on 28 shots in the game and going 3-for-4 in the shootout. It was McIntosh's second consecutive victory and third straight game in which he has earned Elmira at least one point in the standings. Derek Gustafson stopped 29-of-30 in regulation, but was proven a mere mortal in the shootout with one save on four attempts.

1/7/05 Adirondack 1 @ Elmira 2

Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals came from behind to win their second consecutive game against the Adirondack Frostbite, this time a 2-1 victory in regulation Saturday night at the First Arena.

After a quiet and scoreless first period where Adirondack out-shot the Jackals 13-4, the Frostbite would take the lead late in the second period, one that was equally lack luster. Sylvain Cloutier was the benefactor of a perfect deflection by Blue Bennefield, who tipped a pass from Hugo Belanger across the crease to an unmarked Cloutier. With all the time in the world, Cloutier could've waited an eternity before tapping in the puck, but he wasted no time to lift Adirondack to a 1-0 lead at 16:33 of the 2nd period.

But the Jackals would not settle for a third period effort similar to the first two. The home side came out flying in the final frame and their hard work paid off just past the halfway point. Kevin Cooper back-handed a pass from Konstantin Kalmikov past goaltender Kris Tebbs to tie the game at one at 10:30, with Kalmikov and Jarrett Konkle earning assists; the goal was Cooper's 14th of the season. But Cooper's biggest heroics were yet to come. 1:57 later Cooper zipped down the right wing with the puck and in the process of being tripped up by defenseman Dmitri Suur, he was able to get the puck over the Jason Sessa, who in turn found Eddy Lowe in the low slot. Lowe's first shot was stopped by Tebbs, but the rebound came right back and Lowe banged in the rebound at 12:27, with assists from Sessa and Cooper. The goal was The Next Mayor of Elmira's 5th of the season, putting Elmira in front 2-1. Jackals goalie Ryan McIntosh was huge down the stretch, stopping numerous quality Adirondack scoring chances, helping to make Lowe's goal the game winner.

McIntosh was the star for Elmira again tonight, stopping 26-of-27 shots tonight for his 6th win of the season and second straight 1-goal against victory over Adirondack. Kris Tebbs was solid in goal for the Frostbite, making 22 saves on 24 shots in the loss.

1/8/06 Richmond 2 @ Elmira 4

Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals earned their 4th consecutive victory with a 4-2 win over the Richmond Riverdogs Sunday afternoon at the First Arena.

Playing in their second game of a stretch of seven at home, the Jackals took a mere 20 seconds to get on the board in the opening period. Eddy Lowe, who scored the game winner against Adirondack Saturday night, back-handed a shot from the low slot past Richmond goalie Mike D'Alessandro for a 1-0 lead. Kevin Cooper and Josh Piro each had assists on the goal. Late in the period Elmira killed off a stretch of 4-consecutive minor penalties to keep their lead going into the break.

In the second period, the Jackals took their 5th-straight penalty 62 seconds after play resumed. At 1:23 Evgeny Lazarev got a loose puck after a failed clearing attempt and beat Jackals goalie Ryan McIntosh back to the net to tie the game. But Elmira would respond just as quickly as humanly possible. Eleven seconds later Kevin Cooper's back-hand shot slipped past D'Alessandro to regain the lead at 1:34, with assists going to Sean Regan and Konstantin Kalmikov. The Jackals out-shot the Riverdogs 22-14 in the second period, but failed to bolster their lead.

In the third period, Elmira got the insurance goal they were looking for. Jarrett Konkle poked in a rebound at 1:20 from Kalmikov and Chris Chaput, making it 3-1 Elmira. Richmond got a goal back at 15:52 when Dan Vandermeer snapped a shot into the net for a power play goal, but it would not be enough. The Jackals added an empty net goal from Kalmikov at 19:10, assisted by Konkle and Trevor Burgess to ice the game in the final minute.

Ryan McIntosh earned first star honors with his 7th win of the season, and 4th in a row, making 32 saves on 34 shots for Elmira. Richmond's Mike D'Alessandro stopped 36-of-39 in the losing effort. Elmira was 0-for-7 on the power play in the game, while Richmond was 2-for-7.
