Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals lost a 1-0 lead in the third period to the Toledo Walleye, who scored five goals on the Jackals in the final session for a 5-1 victory over the Jackals on Saturday night at the Lucas County Arena in Toledo, Ohio. Elmira led 1-0 early in the game. At 1:55 with the Jackals on the power play in the first period, Maxime Gratchev took a shot from the right wing side that went through a screen past Toledo goaltender Alec Richards, giving Elmira the advantage.
Jackals goaltender Pier-Olivier Pelletier kept the Jackals in front through the first two periods, making 19 saves on 19 Walleye shots through 40 minutes.
However, it was all Walleye in the third period. Toledo scored at 3:23 with Chris Robertson firing a one timer past Pelletier to even the game. Sebastian Piche then skated along the goal line and cut in front of Pelletier to backhand a shot past him to give the Walleye the 2-1 advantage at 5:28. Moments later, Mike Hedden's shot from the left circle flew past Pelletier to give Toledo the two-goal cushion at 6:41.
The Jackals had appeared to pull back to within one at 18:00 of the third period. Yannick Tifu, positioned in the right corner, fired a puck off the goaltender and into the net. With no immediate explanation available, the goal was waved off.
Moments later Maxime Tanguay scored on an empty-net bid to make it 4-1, and Ryan Stokes backhanded a puck past Pelletier late in the game to seal the 5-1 victory for Toledo. Pier-Olivier Pelletier made 34 saves on 38 Walleye shots, falling to 1-2 on the season. Richards stopped 23 of 24 Jackals attempts, improving to 6-3-0-3.
Elmira fell to 11-10-2-1 on the season, although it did not take a hit in the American East Division standings with Johnstown, Reading, and Trenton all losing Saturday night. Toledo upped its record to 11-10-1-3, moving past the Jackals for the eighth spot in the American Conference.
