Trenton Devils News Release

North Charleston, SC - North Charleston, SC - A four-goal first period propelled the Stingrays to their ninth straight win and second in as many nights against Trenton Saturday at the North Charleston Coliseum. Even after a goaltender change, the South Carolina offense continued to find the back of the net with two more goals in the second and one in the third en route to a 7-2 win.

With five days since his last start, Gerald Coleman was pulled after allowing three goals on four shots in the first twelve minutes of the first. Jake Hauswirth, Gregg Johnson and Keith Johnson each lit the lamp to put the Rays in control, with Matt Fornataro notching two assists. Less than 13 minutes into the first, Dave Caruso took over in net, sparking a brief turnaround for the Devils. Gord Burnett dropped the gloves with Nate Kiser at 14:33, and the Devils offense started to put the attack in gear with the Zancanaro-Kucharski-Vokes line again setting the example. Playing in their third game as a unit, the trio generated their third goal. This time Kyle Kucharski made a brilliant feed from the right edge of the trapezoid to the crashing Tony Zancanaro who ripped it past goalie Todd Ford at 15:22 for his fourth goal of the year and second in as many games.

Dave Caruso made two very sharp saves in the following moments, as it seemed Trenton was turning the tide. But just seconds after an impressive glove save, Caruso could not snatch a Johann Kroll shot from the right point. Following a face-off win from Trent Campbell, Keith Johnson tipped the puck back for Kroll whose shot ticked off Caruso's glove and into the net reasserting South Carolina's presence and pushing the lead to 4-1 at 18:54 of the first.

The Rays extended their lead in the second period, starting with Keith Johnson feeding Trent Campbell in front for his second goal of the weekend to make it 5-1 at 9:53. Matt Fornataro roofed one over a sprawlling Caruso for his third point of the night and 12th goal of the year at 19:09 of the second for a five-goal lead.

Trenton continued to create scoring chances and finally cashed in six minutes into the third. Just after Caruso did the splits for an athletic save, Trenton turned the puck up ice with Vokes and Jeff Prough rushing into the zone. Prough's high-slot blast went just wide and off the glass, but the rebound came to Vokes whose backhander was also sent just wide. As Prough got the puck in front again with the goalie down, his shot was deflected into the air and ultimately up the slot. The third Devil in, Dave Leaderer, stepped right into a shot amidst the goal-mouth scramble and fired it home for his sixth of the year.

South Carolina regained a five-goal edge on a shorthanded breakaway at 13:25 of the third. With all sorts of chances in the first 30 seconds of a Devils power play, a chaotic scene near the Rays' goal freed up Rob Ricci to take the puck coast to coast on a two-on-one. Ricci beat Caruso for his tenth of the year to make it 7-2.

The Devils (9-13-2-2, 22pts) remain in third place, one point ahead of Johnstown, while the Rays (18-6-1-3, 40pts) continue to pace the American Conference by nine points. Trenton returns to the Sun National Bank Center for a three game series against Cincinnati, with games Thursday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
