'Blades Net Bears, No Goals

Estero, Fl-- The final game of the series between the Charlotte Checkers and the Florida Everblades saw the ‘Blades shut out for only the second time this season. Charlotte drew blood in the first with two goals from Kenny Roche. The bizarre second period saw the ‘Blades out shoot the Checkers 26-8, but Ryan Munce proved impenetrable. The Teddy Bear Toss started on a false alarm and couldn't be stopped so the remaining 1:35 was played at the start of the third. Barry Brust held the Checkers off the board in the third and the game ended 3-0.

The first period started with Kenny Roche of the Charlotte Checkers making a break towards goal tender Barry Brust. Brust stopped Roche, but the on ice officials decided the move deserved a penalty shot. Roche skated up to the net and shot, but Brust cleared it keeping the score 0-0. Kenny Roche extended his point streak to three games with two goals in the first period. Steve McJannet (Everblades) and Tysen Dowzak (Checkers) had words and it looked like a fight was about to erupt, but the on ice officials put a stop to it and both players left the ice for the remainder of the period.

The ‘Blades entered the second stanza facing a two goal deficit. Steve McJannet and Tysen Dowzak sat their penalties at the start of the period. Twenty seconds after the previous penalty expired, both players dropped the gloves. The fight ended with McJannet on top and both players were sent to the box with five minutes for fighting. Brandon Buck had a breakaway chance, but was robbed by net minder Ryan Munce. Charlotte went up 3-0 with a wrap around goal from new comer Mike Harder. The goal light flickered and it appeared as if Florida had scored. Teddy bears started to fall, but It was declared no goal, yet the torrent of bears did not stop. The donated teddy bears will be brought to the Children's Hospital of South West Florida by the Florida Everblades players as well as being donated to other SW Florida charities.

There was an eighteen-minute intermission followed by the final 1:35 of the second period. Face off was then held at center ice for the official start of the third stanza. Barry Brust held the Checkers scoreless in the third and posted a .93 save percentage for 60 minutes of play. The game ended Checkers 3, Everblades 0.
