Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - In a Friday night matchup the Victoria Salmon Kings and Las Vegas Wranglers met in the second contest of a three-games in three-night set at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Victoria's David Shantz got the nod in net while Las Vegas countered with Michael Ouzas.
The Wranglers struck first for the second night in a row 4:06 into the game. On a Las Vegas rush into the offensive zone, Shantz made two quick saves on shots by Adam Miller and Robbie Bina. The second rebound bounced to the right side where a waiting Ryan Weston buried his fifth goal of the season into an open cage. Scott Howes pulled Victoria even at 9:10 when he stick handled around the Vegas defender before snapping a shot short side past Ouzas' blocker. Howes' goal was his sixth of the campaign. The Salmon Kings took a 2-1 lead at 13:47 when Wes Goldie fired a hard slap shot from the high slot that deflected off a defender's stick and eluded Ouzas. Goldie's marker was his team-leading ninth of the season. Shantz made 15 first-period saves, allowing the home side to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
The Salmon Kings utilized a shorthanded two-on-one break to extend their lead to 3-1 at 7:41. Chad Painchaud worked into the Wranglers' zone alongside Olivier Latendresse, and kept the puck for himself. He wired home a hard wrist-shot from the left faceoff circle. The shot beat Ouzas glove side across his body and rang off the corner of the post and into the net giving Painchaud his eighth goal of the season. Victoria would take their 3-1 advantage into the third period.
Las Vegas cut into the Salmon Kings lead while shorthanded when Francis Lemieux made a nice move past Brandon Roach and moved into the left faceoff circle and used a Victoria defender to screen Shantz from a quick wrist shot that beat the goaltender's glove hand. Lemieux's goal was his seventh of the year. Goldie restored the Salmon Kings' two-goal lead at 12:22 when he streaked into the slot and received a pass from Latendresse. The Salmon Kings' captain made no mistake in wristing home his 10th goal of the year past Ouzas' glove. Goldie's marker would also round out the scoring for the game. Salmon Kings 4 Wranglers 2.
Victoria went 0/5=0.0% on the powerplay while Las Vegas was 0/7=0.0%. The Wranglers outshot the Salmon Kings 32-26.
