Jackals Host Brampton on Veterans Night
Game 10: Elmira Jackals (2-5-2-0) vs. Brampton Beast (3-1-1-2)

The Jackals return home following four straight road games, including a three-game trip down south, to face the Brampton Beast in a pair of weekend games at First Arena, starting Friday night for Veterans Appreciation Night. They'll play the second of back-to-back games Saturday night on Chemung County Night. Overall, the teams will meet nine times in 2016-17, including four times over the next two weekends .
The Beast have points in six of their first seven games to open the season, with six games going to overtime or a shootout, where the Beast have three wins and three losses. At 3-1-1-2, they are in fifth place in the North Division with nine points. After the two games in Elmira, the Beast wrap up a three-in-three Sunday at home against Wheeling.
The Jackals lost their fifth straight game Sunday, 3-2, in overtime to the South Carolina Stingrays at the North Charleston Coliseum. Despite the losing streak, the Jackals do have points in two of their last three games and are 2-5-2-0 to begin season. Elmira plays four games in a row against the Beast over the next two weeks.

Last time out
The South Carolina Stingrays rallied from a 2-0 first-period deficit to defeat the Jackals, 3-2, in overtime Nov. 6 at North Charleston Coliseum.
Elmira sprung out of the gates to grab a 2-0 lead in the first period. First, Sebastien Sylvestre beat Parker Milner to the short side on a shot from the right circle just 3:27 into the game, giving the Jackals a 1-0 advantage. Later in the period, Kyle Rankin snapped a shot from the left circle with the Jackals on a 4-on-3 power play, putting them ahead 2-0.
The Stingrays rally began just 1:17 into the third period, with Patrick Gaul banging home a rebound for a power-play goal, pulling South Carolina within one . The Jackals were on the verge of the win until Kelly Zajac, who scored the overtime winner against Elmira three days earlier, tied the game with 10.8 seconds left, jamming home a shot near the crease. In overtime, Joe Devin converted on a 2-on-1, tipping in a cross-ice pass to give the Stingrays a 3-2 win .
Scouting the Beast
At 4.14 goals per game, the Beast have the second-best offense in the ECHL, second only to Toledo (4.30), scoring 29 goals in seven games. However, they rank 26th in the ECHL in goals against, allowing 4.43 goals per game, only ahead of Rapid City. Forward David Pacan leads the Beast with 11 points (4g, 7a) in seven games and he enters the week with assists in each of the last six games. Brandon Marino is second on the team with 10 points (3g, 7a), including the team's only shorthanded goal.
In goal, three goalies have split time for Brampton and all have one win. Zach Fucale and Bryan Pitton are the two currently on the Beast's roster entering the week. Fucale, a 2nd round draft choice by Montreal in 2013, is 1-1-0-0 in two appearances with a 3.84 goals-against average and an .862 save percentage. Pitton, a 2006 5th round draft pick by the Edmonton Oilers, is 1-0-0-2 in three appearances and has a 4.03 goals-against average and a .856 save percentage.
The Beast have points in six of their first seven games, posting a 3-1-1-2 record. That gives them nine points and places Brampton fifth in the North Division, three points ahead of the Jackals. They are tied in points with Wheeling, but the Nailers have played one fewer game. After suffering their first regulation loss of the season last Friday against Kalamazoo, the Beast beat the Fort Wayne Komets in overtime on Sunday. Six of the their seven games have gone to overtime, with three of those going to a shootout .
Head-to-head
The Jackals and Beast will square off nine times in 2016-17, with four of the matches coming over the next two weekends. After the back-to-back games at First Arena this weekend, they will play a home-and-home series starting in Brampton next Friday. Overall, five games will be played in Elmira and four games will take place in Brampton.
Last season the teams met 11 times, with the Jackals winning six and the Beast winning five. The Jackals hold an 11-5-0-1 record head-to-head with the Beast since Brampton joined the ECHL ahead of the 2014-15 season .
Special teams
Brampton's power play has had 33 opportunities in seven games, scoring five power-play goals, which puts them 19th in the ECHL at 15.2%. In their two road games, the Beast have combined to go 2-for-8 (25.0%).
The Jackals power play snapped a three-game drought (0-for-7), by going 1-for-4 in Sunday's game against South Carolina. They are now 6-for-31 (19.4%) with the man advantage, ranking 13th in the league. At home, they are 2-for-9 (22.2%) in three games.
The Beast's penalty kill ranks 20th in the ECHL at 81.0%, allowing 34 power-play goals in 42 shorthanded situations . They are 8-for-9 (88.9%) on the road in two games and they have one shorthanded goal, which came at home.
The Jackals penalty kill gave up one goal in three shorthanded situations Sunday and they are now 11-for-13 in the last four games. On the season they are 22-for-29 (75.9%) on the penalty kill, ranking 25th in the league.
