Mavericks Fall to Komets

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Missouri Mavericks dropped a game on home ice for the first time this season on Friday night as they lost a 6-4 decision at the hands of the Fort Wayne Komets. The loss moved the Mavericks' record to 3-6-1 on the season.

Despite having only met twice last season, the Mavericks and Komets wasted no time getting to work when acquaintences were renewed tonight. The teams traded goals within the first five minutes of the game with Fort Wayne the first to strike. Gabriel Desjardin one-timed a shot from the slot past Ville Husso at 1:57, but Dane Fox responded with a deflection at 4:26 to knot the score. The goal was Fox's third in his last four games and extended his point streak to four games (3g, 4a). Rocco Carzo potted a power play goal at 10:56, with assists from Sam Povorozniouk and Luke Juha, to put Missouri ahead for the first time on the night and the Mavericks took that lead into intermission.

Desjardin struck for his second of the game early in the second period to tie things at two. The Komets were given a golden opportunity to reclaim the lead midway through the frame thanks to power plays at 4-on-3, 5-on-3 and 5-on-4, but some timely saves by Husso kept the league's best power play at bay and left the game tied. The Mavericks couldn't capitalize on the momentum from the successful penalty kills and that allowed the Komets to retake the lead with 15:21 gone in the frame. Curtis Leonard snuck a point shot through traffic in front of Husso for his first goal of the season.

The Mavericks were looking for the equalizer on the power play early in the period and generated two shots on the advantage. Komets goalie Keegan Asmundson kept Missouri from the tying goal and gave Garrett Thompson the chance to put Fort Wayne ahead by two for the first time. Thompson had the puck on a 2-on-1 shortly after the Komets got back to full strength and beeat Husso with a low wrist shot for his fifth goal of the season. Mike Embach, who assisted on Fort Wayne's first two goals, picked up his third point of the night with a backdoor tap in goal with 6:46 left to play with help from David Friedmann. Jesse Graham picked up his second goal of the season with 3:29 left in regulation to pull Missouri within two. Trevor Cheek closed out the Komets' scoring with his second of the season at 1:13, and Reed Seckel set the final with 20 seconds left in the game.

Husso took the loss whith 30 saves against 36 shots. The Mavericks ended the night 1-for-7 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
