Elmira Jackals News Release

Toledo, Ohio - The Elmira Jackals (41-22-2-2) tied their franchise record in ECHL play for wins in a season on Friday night at the Huntington Center, defeating the Toledo Walleye (28-33-2-4), 3-1, to earn their 41st victory of the 2011-2012 campaign. A regulation loss later on Friday by Wheeling to Cincinnati reduced Elmira's magic number to three points over the Nailers to clinch the Atlantic Division title.

Jordan Pietrus redirected in a shot from the left-wing boards by Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel at 8:54, giving Elmira a 1-0 advantage heading into the first intermission.

Dustin Gazley put on a stickhandling display to help extend the Jackals' lead in the second period. The rookie cut through two Walleye skaters from the slot to the right circle and then set up Corey Cowick on the doorstep at 5:36. Cowick tipped in Gazley's feed, increasing Elmira's advantage to 2-0.

Gazley took a long feed from Craig Rivet at the Walleye blue line, skated to the slot, and snapped a shot in from the slot past Alec Richards' glove, making it 3-0 at 10:09.

Kyle Page drove in a loose puck from the left circle at 14:46, putting the Walleye on the board. Elmira took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission, and would hold off Toledo in the third period for the victory.

Brian Stewart (24-11-1-0) made 24 saves on 25 shots as the Jackals beat the Walleye for the second time in as many tries this year. Richards (8-9-0-1) set aside 16 of 19 shots in the loss.

The Jackals and the Walleye battle again on Saturday night in Toledo. Elmira returns to First Arena for its final regular season home game on Friday, Mar. 30 at 7:35 p.m. against the Reading Royals.
