Elmira Jackals News Release
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Elmira Jackals let a 2-0 lead slip away against the Orlando Solar Bears on Saturday night and fell by a 5-3 score at the Amway Center.
Elmira battled Orlando to a scoreless tie through the first period. The Solar Bears had the better of the offensive chances and out-shot the Jackals 16-8. Orlando used a four-minute power play thanks to a high-sticking infraction by Kyle Bushee to generate most of its scoring chances in the stanza. But goalie Maxime Clermont turned away each shot he faced. At the other end of the ice John Curry thwarted each of Elmira's eight shots to keep Orlando even.
In the second, it was Elmira taking control and out-shooting Orlando 17-7. Their efforts were rewarded with a pair of goals, the first by Dustin Gazley at 2:31 and the second by Darren Kramer at 15:31. Gazley whipped home a rebound of a Jean Bourbeau wrist shot while Kramer collected a rebound from a point shot by Jordon Southorn. Clermont's seven saves allowed for Elmira to take the two-goal lead into the break.
In the third, though, Orlando's offense erupted for five unanswered goals and left Elmira looking to make a dramatic comeback. Matt Sisca started the scoring for Orlando at 5:26 with a one-timer from close range. Rob Mignardi followed by scoring on a rebound at 13:39. That was the first of three goals in the span of 2:02 that put Elmira behind for the first time. Kevin Baker followed with a power play goal at 14:21 and Mignardi capped that surge 1:20 later with his second of the game. Clermont was pulled for the extra attacker with over 2:45 left to play, but Baker hit an empty net in the final minute to close out Orlando's scoring. Jack Downing one-timed home a power play goal with less than a second to play to set the final.
Clermont stopped 37 of the 41 shots that he faced. Elmira was 1-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
