Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
PORTLAND, ME - Josh Rodriguez blasted his league-leading 12th home run and finished a triple shy of the cycle to lead the Binghamton Mets past the Portland Sea Dogs, 7-1, on Thursday night at Hadlock Field. Binghamton racked up a dozen hits, including five for extra bases, to stretch their winning streak to a season-best seven games and secure their second consecutive series sweep. Brandon Nimmo doubled twice in his return from the disabled list.
The B-Mets busted out the lumber to break the scoreless game in the fourth inning. After Nimmo doubled to start the frame, Rodriguez sent William Cuevas's 2-2 pitch over the right-field wall for his league-leading 12th home run of the season. Three batters later, Albert Cordero added an RBI single to kick Binghamton's lead to three
Binghamton muscled up in the fifth, peppering Cuevas with three doubles in a four-batter span to open the inning. Nimmo sliced an RBI ground-rule double down the left-field line and Rodriguez blasted another run-producing two-bagger off the right-field wall, chasing Cuevas from the game. Dustin Lawley greeted reliever Simon Mercedes with an RBI single and a fielding error by Marco Hernandez capped Binghamton's four-run frame.
B-Met starter Michael Fulmer played with fire, but avoided getting burnehhhd over six scoreless innings. After a perfect first, the righty dealt with two runners on base in four consecutive innings. Fulmer stranded all eight runners by holding the Sea Dogs hitless in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position.
Aneury Tavarez ended Fulmer's scoreless ride by blasting a leadoff homer in the seventh. Carlos Asuaje scorched a double into the right-field alley, ending the righty's night. Matt Koch took over and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to limit the damage before keeping the Sea Dogs off the board in the eighth. Adam Kolarek tossed a scoreless ninth to seal the sweep.
Fulmer (2-0) allowed one run on seven hits over 6-1/3 innings to earn the victory. Cuevas (6-4) was tagged for six runs on eight hits over 4-1/3 innings in the defeat.
The B-Mets (35-30) continue their week-long road trip and open a four-game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Friday night at 7:05 PM.
