Isotopes Split Series with Division-Leading 51s After 12-1 Loss

NEED TO KNOW: The Albuquerque Isotopes (41-50) split a four-game series over the weekend with the division-leading Las Vegas 51s (53-38) after a 12-1 loss Sunday night at Isotopes Park.

CRITICAL MOMENT: The 51s struck quickly and took Albuquerque out of the game before it even got started. Las Vegas center fielder Matt den Dekker singled to leadoff the game. After a strikeout, Wilmer Flores walked, and Andrew Brown singled, scoring den Dekker. Another walk and two more singles scored two additional runs before an RBI groundout capped the four-run first inning.

EARLY TROUBLE: Las Vegas jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning when four of the first five batters of the game scored. On the season, The Isotopes have given up 145 runs in the first twoinnings, while only scoring 97 for a minus-48 run differential. In innings three through nine, Albuquerque has scored 338 and given up 345 for only a minus-7 differential.

MORE MORALES: Second baseman Delvis Morales doubled in the Isotopes only run in the fifth inning. Mike Baxter smacked a leadoffsingle and advanced to second on a groundout. Morales then dumped a double into short left field to score Baxter. Morales finished the game 1-for-3, and Baxter turned in a 2-for-3 night. The only other multi-hit performance came from Tim Federowicz, who was 2-for-4 with a double.

PETERSON OR PATTERSON: Right-hander Red Patterson started the game and went five innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits. He struck out seven and walked two. To end the game though, newly acquired first baseman and 12-year-Minor Leaguer Brock Peterson took over on the mound for his professional pitching debut. After a pair of groundouts, he allowed only one hit, a home run, before ending the inning with a fly out.

ON DECK: The Isotopes welcome the El Paso Chihuahuas to town for a four-game set beginning Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Drew Carpenter (1-0, 4.91 ERA) will make his third appearance, second start, for Albuquerque, while El Paso will go with righty Chris Smith (2-1, 4.15 ERA).

IN THE HOLE: Following the El Paso series, the Isotopes will travel to Las Vegas for a short three-game, two-day series prior to the All-Star Break. The Topes and 51s will play a doubleheader on Friday, July 11, at 6:05 p.m. MT followed by a single game at 6:05 p.m. that Saturday. The All-Star Break is July 13-16.

TOPES ALL-STARS: Isotopes outfielder Joc Pederson was elected to the Pacific Coast League squad for the 2014 Triple-A All-Star Game on July 16 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, NC. Pitching Coach Glenn Dishman will also serve on the PCL's field staff.
