De Paula, Berken And Hembree Combine To Quiet Tacoma

FRESNO, Calif. - A three-run first inning was all the Fresno Grizzlies (44-46) needed to work with as they shut down the Tacoma Rainiers (41-47) offense on way to a 5-1 victory Saturday night at Chukchansi Park. In the Grizzlies' first, Darren Ford punched a two-run homer (3) onto the grass berm in left-center field, while two batters later Andrew Susac towered a solo homer (8) off the outfield ticket office.

The home run by Susac gave him a hit in five consecutive at bats dating back to last night's game in which he went 4-4 with a double and a RBI.

One start after allowing no hits over 4.0 scoreless innings, Jose De Paula (W, 2-2) followed it up by limiting Tacoma to one unearned run on three hits over 5.0 innings. The run by the Rainiers came when right fielder Brett Krill took a bad angle on Humberto Quintero's line drive that rolled all the way to the wall. The relay throw in by Krill was mishandled by second baseman Ehire Adrianza, which allowed Leury Bonilla to advance from third to home.

Jason Berken, activated from the disabled list tonight, tossed 3.0 scoreless innings in his first appearance since June 14th. He is scheduled to rejoin the rotation moving forward.

Outfielder Brett Krill added some insurance in the fourth inning when he shifted into third gear to leg out a two-run triple to make it 5-0. The hit gave Krill his first extra-base hit and first set of RBI's at the Triple-A level. The triple also was the first by a Fresno hitter since Juan Ciriaco raced around for a three-bagger on June 8th at Las Vegas.

Tonight's game marked the fourth time in the last six games Fresno has limited an opponent to three runs or less.

The Grizzlies send left-hander Mike Kickham (6-5, 3.46) to the mound Sunday night to face Tacoma right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (1-4, 4.54) in the series finale. The game marks the first ARCO Value Days Family Ticket Package. The pack includes four tickets, four jumbo hot dogs, four medium sodas, two peanut packs and two fun zone wristbands, all for $49.
