Sky Sox Fall to Storm Chasers 7-2, But Still Win Series

The Omaha Storm Chasers (46-44) salvaged the final game of a three-game series against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (40-50) by the score of 7-2 but still lost the series two games to one to the Sky Sox. Solid pitching by Clayton Mortensen (4-0) and three homers by Omaha hitters lead the way on Sunday afternoon at Werner Park.

Mortensen, who previously played for the Sky Sox in 2011, tossed six solid innings giving up just two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out six. A pair of relievers tossed the final three innings of scoreless ball to preserve the win.

At the plate, Omaha batters got to Sky Sox starter Juan Nicasio (2-2) via the long ball as they belted three homers off the righty. The first came off the bat of Whit Merrifield in the first inning as he led off the game for the home team. The solo shot was the first of his Triple-A career and put Omaha up 1-0.

Colorado Springs answered right back in the top of the second though as Kyle Parker launched a solo homer of his own, his tenth of the season, leading off the frame. That knotted the game at 1-1 but Omaha would pull away from there.

Storm Chasers first baseman Matt Fields produced the next five runs for Omaha on a pair of homers. His first came in the fourth, a two-run shot, and his second, a three-run tater, came in the sixth. Both were hit off of Nicasio who came into the game having surrendered zero home runs in his previous three starts for the Sox. The final run for Omaha came via a sac fly by Brian Bocock in the seventh off of reliever Rob Scahill.

The only other run for the Sky Sox came in the fifth when Jason Pridie plated Even Frey on an RBI groundout.

The Sky Sox continue their road trip tomorrow evening in Round Rock, TX as they start a four-game series against the Round Rock Express. The Sox will send out rehabbing lefty Brett Anderson (0-0, 0.00) for his second start with the club. He will face RH Justin Germano (3-7, 3.96).

Sky Sox Notes: Angelys Nina finished the game 2-for-4 to record his fifth straight multi-hit game...Before the game, RH Brook Brown had his contract purchased by the Rockies to take the place of injured righty Nick Masset. Brown made his Major League debut against the Dodgers later in the day and tossed 1.2 scoreless innings giving up just one hit and striking out two.
