Iowa Cubs News Release
Oklahoma City, OK - The Iowa Cubs (47-41) scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but didn't score again in a 3-2 loss to the Oklahoma City RedHawks (47-43) at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark on Saturday night. The RedHawks have won the first two games of this series and seven straight against the Cubs going back to last season. The Cubs' lead in the American Northern Division has been cut to one game over the RedHawks.
The Cubs started quickly against RedHawks' starter Paul Clemens. Arismendy Alcantara drew a walk to lead off the game, moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt, and scored on a double to deep center by Javy Baez. With two outs, Kris Bryant drove in Baez with a line drive single to left. The Cubs would add just two more hits the rest of the game. Alcantara singled in the third inning and Rafael Lopez had a base hit in the fifth. Clemens (4-0) worked through five innings and struck out six to earn the win. Jorge De Leon pitched two scoreless innings and struck out three. Jason Stoffel pitched a perfect eighth, but walked Manny Ramirez to start the ninth. Kevin Chapman came in to get the final three outs to earn his second save in this series and his fourth of the season.
The RedHawks score a run in each of the first three innings against Cubs' stater Carlos Pimentel. Robbie Grossman led off the bottom of the first with a double to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. With runners on first and third and one out, the RedHawks pulled off a double steal, with Grossman coming home on a throw to second base.
Matt Duffy led off the bottom of the second inning with a home run to left-center field to tie the game. Pimentel leads the Cubs' staff with 12 home runs allowed this season. Grossman led off the bottom of the third with another double, stole third, and scored when the throw skipped down the left field line for an error. Pimentel (1-5) would work through five innings and strike out five in the loss. Alberto Cabrera struck out four in two scoreless innings and Marcos Mateo finished the game with a scoreless eighth in his first game since coming off the disabled list on July 1.
The Cubs and RedHawks wrap up this series on Sunday night at 6:05 PM. RH Kyle Hendricks (10-5, 3.58) will start for the Cubs against LH Rudy Owens (4-4, 5.45) for the RedHawks. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 5:45.
