Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (45-44) fell behind the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (40-49) in the early frames 5-0, but could not capitalize on opportunities in the seventh and eighth innings to close the gap in a 5-2 defeat. It was Omaha's seventh loss in the last eight games, and clinches their fourth series loss in the last five series.

After Buddy Baumann tossed three scoreless innings in his first start since the 2011 season, Michael Mariot allowed seven hits and five runs in 1.1 innings in his first appearance for the Chasers since late May. After Colorado Springs scored their fifth run and final run in the fifth inning, the Omaha relief staff combined to hold the Sky Sox scoreless and allow only three total baserunners in the final 4.2 innings to keep the Chasers within striking distance.

Francisco Pena provided the only offense of the night for Omaha on a big swing of the bat with a solo homer in the sixth, and no swing of the bat on a bases-loaded walk in the seventh. The Chasers could not score another run in the seventh with the bases full, as Paul Janish popped out to end the frame, and could not bring runners at second and third to score in the eighth inning with only one out as they hit two consecutive infield pop-ups. Omaha did not have a hit with runners in scoring position all night.

Since Omaha was tied for the best record in the Pacific Coast League on June 17 at 41-31, the Storm Chasers have put up a league worst 4-13 record to start the second half of the season. Even with the recent slide, Omaha still remains only 2.5 games back in the division as first place Iowa lost a third consecutive game tonight.

In the series finale tomorrow Omaha will send out RHP Clayton Mortensen (3-0, 1.39 ERA), who has the second best ERA in the PCL since he joined the Storm Chasers in late May. He will face off with Sky Sox RHP Juan Nicasio (2-1, 5.51 ERA), with first pitch on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and MiLB.TV scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
