Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Renyel Pinto tossed a complete game gem Wednesday night, pushing the Albuquerque Isotopes (48-50) to a 3-2 win over New Orleans (49-49) in the second game of a doubleheader at Isotopes Park. The Zephyrs took game one 6-5.
The âTopes gave Pinto (8-2) an early lead and the big left-hander held on to it, earning the victory after allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts through six innings. Zephyrs starter Nelson Figueroa (2-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits through three frames.
Robert Andino gave the âTopes a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the first. Albuquerque tacked on two more in the third thanks to an RBI single by Matt Cepicky and a sacrifice fly by Tom Wilson. Cepicky finished the game 3-for-3 with an RBI.
New Orleans scored twice in the seventh on Pinto, but with the tying run on third and two outs, Pinto induced a game-ending groundout.
In game one, Albuquerque scored four times in the fourth and rallied with a run in the seventh, but was edged 6-5.
The Zephyrs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second as Josh Labandeira and pitcher Billy Traber hit back-to-back two-out, run-scoring singles. The Isotopes answered in a big way in the home half of the inning, manufacturing four runs to take a 4-2 lead. The âTopes used three-straight hits-the third an RBI single by Chris Aguila-to plate their first run. Recently promoted Edgar Gonzalez drove another home with a groundout to short, Eric Reed drew a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and Andino hit a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring.
New Orleans added single tallies in the fourth and seventh innings to take 6-4 lead into the bottom of the last inning. Albuquerque rallied, using a sharply hit groundball to the left side by Mike Kinkade to plate its fifth run. New Orleans reliever Travis Hughes struck out Jason Stokes, though, to end the ballgame.
Yusmeiro Petit (2-4), making his first start since returning from a second stint with the Marlins, allowed five runs on six hits through four innings, taking the loss. Traber (7-6) earned the win, scattering four runs on six hits through six innings. Hughes picked up the save, closing out the seventh.
The series comes to a close on Thursday with a 7:05 p.m. MT first pitch at The Lab. Nic Ungs (7-8, 3.90) takes the ball for the âTopes, and Anastacio Martinez (3-6, 4.50) gets the nod for the Z's.
Thursday's series finale includes a âTopes Headband Giveaway, sponsored by Macy's. Tickets can be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, www.albuquerquebaseball.com, Ticketmaster outlets, or at www.ticketmaster.com. For more information, please call (505) 924-2255.
