Portland Beavers News Release
TUCSON, Ariz. - Portland Beavers manager Craig Colbert earned his 500th career victory and the Portland Beavers held on for a 5-4 victory over the Tucson Sidewinders Wednesday night at Tucson Electric Park.
Despite getting out-hit 13-6, the Beavers (46-51) built a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning and managed to hold off the Sidewinders (61-35) for their fifth win in their last seven tries.
Colbert, who began his managerial career in 2000 with Class A Fort Wayne, is 500-438 in seven seasons as a manager in the San Diego Padres system. Colbert is a two-time winner of the Padres' Jack Krol Award for excellence in player development and is 200-184 in three seasons as the manager of the Beavers.
Jack Cust started the scoring for the Beavers with an RBI double. With runners on second and third, Justin Leone drove in two more with a line-drive single and later scored on an RBI single by Luke Carlin. The Beavers capped the five-run fourth with an unearned run when pitcher Dustin Nippert's throwing error allowed Dewon Brazelton to reach base and Bobby Hill to score from third.
Tucson chipped away with a run in the fifth, two more in the seventh and a fourth run in the eighth on an RBI single by Brian Barden.
The Sidewinders threatened in the bottom of the ninth, getting singles from Miguel Montero and Chris Carter, but Scott Cassidy struck out Barden for the final out and his third save in as many appearances since joining the Beavers.
Jim Brower was credited with the win with two innings of work for the Beavers.
Brazelton lasted four innings in his return to the Beavers after spending the majority of the last month on the disabled list with a strained oblique. The right-hander, who was activated from the DL prior to the game, did not allow a run and gave up just three hits before being taken out after 58 pitches in his first start with the club since June 22.
Nippert, who was taken out after 3 2/3 innings, took the loss for Tucson.
The Beavers and Sidewinders conclude their series Thursday at 7 p.m.
NOTES: The Beavers released pitcher Aquilino Lopez Wednesday and added pitcher Mike Adams ... pitcher Mike Thompson, who was to start for the Beavers Wednesday night, was recalled by the Padres and took a no-decision in San Diego's loss to Philadelphia Wednesday afternoon ... catcher George Kottaras did not play after suffering a neck contusion when he was struck by a foul ball Tuesday night ... the Beavers used five pitchers in the game ... Tucson stranded 11 runners.
