Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Tucson, AZ - The Sidewinders dropped their second straight game to the Portland Beavers last night by a final of 5-4. It was the second consecutive one run loss for the team. 3B Alberto Callaspo led the top of the first off with a triple but was left stranded at the end of the inning. It was a common theme for the Sidewinders all night as the team left eleven runners stranded throughout the course of the night.
The Beavers got on the board first by sending ten batters to the plate and bringing five around to score. The rally started with two outs in the inning. 1B Paul McAnulty and RF Jon Knott each singled through the hole at short to put runners on first and second. LF Jack Cust then doubled to score one run. 3B Justin Leone then singled to left to plate both Knott and Cust and give Portland a 3-0 lead. 2B Bobby Hill walked and C Luke Carlin singled through the hole at second to score Leone from second. The Pitcher, Dewon Brazelton, then reached on a throwing error by Sidewinders' starter RHP Dustin Nippert that scored hill. It was the end of Nippert's night, as he was pulled for RHP Mike Koplove who got SS Manny Alexander to ground out to end the inning with Portland leading 5-0.
2B Matt Erickson led off with a single and moved to second on a LF Robby Hammock single. Erickson moved to third on a passed ball and scored on an error to make the score 5-1.
Tucson came within two runs in the bottom of the seventh. LF Donnie Sadler and Callaspo led off with singles before C Miguel Montero reached on a fielding error that scored Sadler. RF Carlos Quentin grounded into a double play to score Callaspo and make the score 5-3.
The Sidewinders then came within one in the eighth. CF Chris Young hit what looked like a routine single but he broke quickly out of the box and never let up, stretching it to a double. SS Brian Barden singled to right-center to score Young.
Brazelton was effective for the Beavers but did not figure in the decision as he only went four innings. He gave up three hits but did not allow a run while striking out three batters. RHP Jim Brower got the victory, working two innings in which he allowed two runs, both unearned, on two hits and two walks. Nippert got the loss for the Sidewinders, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits and two walks.
