Padres recall Mike Thompson; Dewon Brazelton reinstated from DL

PORTLAND, Ore. - The San Diego Padres today recalled Portland right-handed pitcher Mike Thompson and requested waivers on infielder Vinny Castilla for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

Also on Wednesday, the Beavers reinstated right-handed pitcher Dewon Brazelton from the disabled list, added right-handed pitcher Mike Adams to the active roster and released right-handed pitcher Aquilino Lopez.

Thompson, 25, had his contract purchased from Portland May 17 and made nine starts for the Padres, going 3-2 with a 4.30 ERA. He was optioned to Portland following his start in the first game of the Padres doubleheader on July 1.

In 10 starts overall with Portland this season, Thompson, who took a no-decision in his start for the Padres against Philadelphia Wednesday, is 5-1 with a 4.10 ERA, striking out 36 batters and walking 14.

Brazelton, 26, was placed on the disabled list June 25 (retroactive to June 23) with a strained oblique. In eight appearances (7 starts) with the Beavers this season, Brazelton, who starts tonight in Tucson, is 1-3 with a 3.79 ERA. The right-hander started the season with the Padres and was outrighted on May 12 after going 0-2 with a 12.00 ERA in nine games (2 starts) with San Diego.

With the Beavers, Brazelton pitched a complete-game, one-hit shutout, June 16 vs. Fresno.

Adams, 27, was acquired July 18 from Cleveland in exchange for right-handed pitcher Brian Sikorski. Adams, 27, went 0-0 with an 11.57 ERA (3er, 2.1ip) in two games for the Milwaukee Brewers this season before being traded to the New York Mets on May 26. He was designated for assignment by New York on July 4 and subsequently claimed off waivers by the Indians on July 7. In a combined 31 minor league games with the Brewers, Mets and Indians organizations in 2006, Adams is 1-1 with two saves and 3.79 ERA.

Lopez, 31, was 3-4 with two saves and a 5.52 ERA in 41 relief appearances with the Beavers this season. The right-hander compiled 72 strikeouts in 62.0 innings with Portland and is currently tied for second in the Pacific Coast League in appearances.

Lopez, who was acquired from Philadelphia in exchange for outfielder Matt Thayer and third baseman Trey Johnston on March 28, 2006, worked two innings of relief in the Beavers' first-ever perfect game in the second game of a doubleheader June 9 at Sacramento.
