Isotopes Fall in First Extra Innings Contest of 2018

April 9, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

The Isotopes (3-2) played their first extra innings contest of 2018 on Monday afternoon, falling to the Salt Lake Bees (2-3), 5-4, in 11 innings at Smith's Ballpark. This was also Albuquerque's first experience with the new extra innings rule that was implemented for this season, having a runner at second base to start each frame.

Both teams took advantage of the new rule in the 10th inning. Josh Fuentes brought Tom Murphy home on an RBI single to put the Isotopes ahead in the top half of the frame. The Bees answered right back to tie the game on a wild pitch, forcing the game on to the 11th inning.

Albuquerque loaded the bases in the top of the 11th with no outs, but were unable to cross the plate. Salt Lake began the bottom of the 11th with speedy outfielder Ben Revere at second base who later scored the game-winning run on Nolan Fontana's sacrifice fly to right.

Reliever Keith Hessler was charged with the loss for Albuquerque. Starting pitcher Chris Jensen made his Isotopes debut, yielding just two runs and six hits in five innings. The right-hander also compiled five strikeouts during his outing.

Albuquerque outhit Salt Lake 11-10, but left 15 runners on base. Murphy was once again a force at the plate for the Isotopes, going 2-for-5 with two RBI. The catcher is now 12-for-21 at the plate to begin the 2018 campaign.

The Isotopes return to Albuquerque on Tuesday to begin their first homestand of the season, starting with a three-game set against the Las Vegas 51s. The Isotopes have not announced a starting pitcher while the 51s plan to start right-hander Corey Oswalt (0-1 6.75) on the hill. First pitch for the home opener at Isotopes Park is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.?
