March 22, 2018 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The New York Islanders announced today defenseman Sebastian Aho has been loaned to the team's American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. In addition, the Sound Tigers have recalled forwards Jeff Kubiak and Yanick Turcotte from the Worcester Railers H.C. of the ECHL.
Aho, 21, recorded four points (one goal, three assists) in 22 games with the Islanders this season, including his NHL debut on Dec. 31, 2017 against the Colorado Avalanche. The first-year defenseman also collected 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists), four power-play goals and a plus-two rating in 30 games with the Sound Tigers. Aho is tied for the league lead among defensemen with four game-winning goals and was selected to the 2018 AHL All-Star Classic in January, but was unable to attend due to his call-up with the Islanders.
A native of Umeå, Sweden, Aho agreed to a three-year entry-level deal with the Islanders on July 5 after he was selected by the club in the fifth round (#139 overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft. He spent parts of the last four seasons with Skellefteå AIK in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) and posted career highs in goals (10), assists (20), points (30) and games played (50) with the team last season. He added two assists in seven playoff games, and helped Skellefteå capture 2017 SHL silver medal honors.
In 152 career SHL games, Aho registered 15 goals, 45 assists and 60 points during the regular season and also skated in 49 career playoff games, helping Skellefteå win the SHL championship in 2013-14.
The 5'10, 170-pound defenseman also skated with Team Sweden in the World Junior Championships from 2012-15.
Turcotte, 21, played one game with the Sound Tigers earlier this season and recorded two penalty minutes in his AHL debut against the Springfield Thunderbirds on Dec. 9. He also collected 10 points (one goal, nine assists) and a team-leading 181 penalty minutes in 51 games with Worcester.
A native of Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval, Quebec, Turcotte played each of the last four seasons with the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). In 212 career games, he recorded 30 points (nine goals, 21 assists) and 335 penalty minutes. Turcotte earned a career-high four goals, 11 assists and 15 points last season, as well as a career-high 135 penalty minutes in 2014-15. The 6'0, 207-pound winger also served as an alternate captain each of the last two seasons with the Remparts.
Kubiak, 24, is fourth on the Railers in scoring with 28 points (14 goals, 14 assists) in 59 games this season. He collected five points (four goals, one assist) in his last five games and also ranks fourth on the team in goals. In addition, Kubiak made his AHL debut with the Sound Tigers on Jan. 17 against the Charlotte Checkers.
Prior to turning pro, the 6'3, 212-pound forward played each of the last four seasons at Cornell University, collecting 61 points (15 goals, 46 assists) and a plus-19 rating in 116 career games with the Big Red. He established career highs in goals (10), assists (17) and points (34) during his junior campaign in 2015-16 and gathered 17 points (three goals, 14 assists) in 25 games as a senior earlier this season, while serving as an alternate captain.
A native of Tinley Park, Ill., Kubiak also spent two seasons in the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Chicago Steel and Muskegon Lumberjacks from 2011-13. He registered 44 points (20 goals, 24 assists) in 109 games. In addition, Kubiak played in the 2012 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, where he scored the game-winning goal for Team East.
