Lomberg Scores Lone Tally in Heat Defeat North of the Border
March 22, 2018 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Stockton Heat News Release
WINNIPEG, MANITOBA. - Ryan Lomberg prevented the Heat getting shut out with a late third period goal, but a three-goal second period by Manitoba sent the Heat to the 4-1 loss at BellMTS Place on Thursday night. The Heat were dealt a couple of early blows, losing two defensemen in the early goings of the first period, but somehow, the team rallied behind the shortened defensive bench and were able to hold the Moose off the scoresheet in the first 20-minutes, and would even see one defenseman in Cody Goloubef return to the game. However, the Moose got a few bounces to go their way in the second, starting with a puck that was underneath Heat goalie Jon Gillies and kicked out to the waiting arms of Jan Kostalek for the opening goal. Moments later it'd be a turnover in the defensive zone that saw Manitoba's JC Lipon shoot one off of Gillies pads, but the bounces continued to go against the visitors, as the rebound caromed off of the left pad, bounced off his own defenseman's skate and in, and followed that up with a shorthanded goal to go up 3-0 before the end of the middle frame. Lomberg would end the Moose's shutout bid late in the game, but an empty net goal restored the three-goal advantage and gave the Moose a 4-1 win. The Heat finish off the season series with the Moose on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. PST, with fans able to catch all the action on AHL Live for $7.99. Stockton will then return to California to host another Wing It Wednesday, hosting the Cleveland Monsters for the final time this season on March 28. Fans can purchase $.50 wings and $4 bottomless popcorn, along with purchase tickets to both remaining Wednesday games starting at $5. QUOTES
"It is professional sports, and stuff happens. You have to adjust and be resilient. Adversity happens and it is one of the most important parts of being a professional. I thought we did a good job when we were down two goals. The guys stuck together and battled. It wasn't the outcome we wanted in the end, but the team showed a lot of heart." - Colby Robak on a few tough bounces tonight
"There is always that in the back of your mind at this time of year, but at the same time you can only control what you can control. All we can control is our game and doing what we can do to win. Tonight stung a bit, but we will get back on the horse Saturday and see how it goes." - Robak on Stockton sitting outside of a playoff spot with 10 games remaining
"We did some good things, we battled. They are a good team, they are where they are in the standings for a reason. But they are human, and they put on their pants one leg at a time too, so we just have to do our thing and hope for the best." - Robak on the top team in the Central, and now the West, in the Manitoba Moose
"I thought tonight [our defenseman] had a lot of pressure and challenges with just the four of them and the penalties they had to kill. I thought they did an excellent job early on tonight. They competed hard, those are the situations where you want your forward group to understand what they are going through and to take the game over a little bit. I didn't think we had enough forwards that were ready to do that tonight." - Coach Ryan Huska on his team's effort from the defense
"I thought Manitoba played a really good game. They played fast and they skated. We made life tough on ourselves with our puck play at times and we didn't have enough urgency from our forwards tonight." - Huska on Manitoba's game and the lack of urgency for the Heat
"You create your own luck through your work and your details. I thought at times we were soft on the puck and we allowed them to come at us. When you defend for long periods of time there will be a breakdown and that is what we saw tonight." - Huska on the concept of "puck luck"
"I don't think this sits well with guys here tonight. We come back together tomorrow and get another skate under us and we will make sure we turn the page and get ready for Saturday here." - Huska on getting ready for Saturday's series finale
