Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated by the Chicago Wolves at The Q on Thursday by a final score of 5-1. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 21-34-6-3 overall this season and with a .398 points percentage, remain alone in seventh place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
The Wolves struck twice in the opening period at even-strength as goals from Paul Thompson at 11:20 and Tomas Hyka at 18:16 gave Chicago a 2-0 edge through 20 minutes of play. In the second, the Wolves extended their lead to 3-0 with an even-strength Jake Bischoff goal at 3:54, but the Monsters put themselves on the board with a Terry Broadhurst marker at 5:49, courtesy of even-strength feeds from Alex Broadhurst and Garett Cockerill. The Wolves scratched home another even-strength tally mid-way through the middle stanza though, as Thompson registered his second of the game at 9:23 to make it 4-1 for the visitors after two periods of play.
The third period saw the Wolves add to their lead at 5:24 with a Brandon Pirri power-play goal and ultimately skate away winners by a final score of 5-1. Cleveland goaltender Jeff Zatkoff fell to 2-6-2 despite stopping 26 pucks while Chicago's Max Lagace improved to 13-4-2 by virtue of a 39-save performance.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Saturday home clash vs. the San Diego Gulls with full coverage, live from The Q, underway at 7:00 pm on SportsTime Ohio, Alt 99.1, and the Monsters Hockey Network.
