Altoona Curve News Release
BOWIE, Md. - Phil Irwin (8-4) hurled seven scoreless innings while a first-inning, two-run home run was all the Curve offense needed in a, 2-0, shutout win over the Bowie Baysox on Wednesday night at Prince George's Stadium. The win for Irwin is his 13th of the season when combined with his five from Bradenton and that total now leads the Pirates minor league system. Irwin combined with Tim Alderson and Noah Krol on the team's 10th shutout win of the season.
Irwin got all the run support he'd need in the first inning when Andrew Lambo took advantage of Baysox starter Tim Bascom's mistake and smacked his eighth home run of the year to put the Curve in front, 2-0. Bascom (8-4) looked like he would cruise through the first before Jeremy Farrell blooped a single to right before the Lambo home run.
The Germantown, Tenn. native took over from there, holding the Baysox to just four hits across seven innings. Bowie had more than one man on base in just one inning, the third, against Irwin and at one point in the game he retired 12 batters in a row.
Alderson picked up right where Irwin left off in the eighth by striking out the side. Krol came in for the ninth and only issued a one out double to L.J. Hoes before getting the final two outs to nail down his 24th save of the season.
Altoona did have some opportunities to widen its lead in the game against Bascom and the Baysox. The Curve had two men on with one down in the seventh and did not score. Starling Marte doubled to lead off the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. He moved to third on a groundout from Brock Holt but never was able to score as Chorye Spoone retired the next two men he faced.
Lambo had the only multi-hit game in the victory for the Curve, finishing the night 2-for-4.
Bascom was nearly as good for Bowie on Wednesday night, striking out a career-best 10 batters over his seven innings of work.
Winners of the first three games of the series, Altoona (63-73) will try for its first sweep of the 2011 season when they take on the Baysox (72-64) at 7:05 p.m. in the final game of the series. RHP Mike Colla (5-10, 3.71), who was the only Curve pitcher to beat the Baysox prior to this series, takes the hill for the Curve in the finale while RHP Oliver Drake (2-5, 5.71) gets the starting nod for Bowie.
Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is slated for 6:35 p.m.
