ERIE, PA - Dusty Ryan launched a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to break a tie game and vault the B-Mets past the Erie SeaWolves by a 6-5 score tonight at Jerry Uht Park. The victory was Binghamton's fifth in a row and 20th in the month of August. They have won twelve of their last thirteen games.
B-Mets starter Jeurys Famila walked the tightrope early in the game. The right-hander hit a batter and handed out a walk in the first inning, but escaped without allowing a run. The SeaWolves collected two hits against him in the second, but failed to crack the scoreboard.
The luck ran out for Familia in the third. Brandon Douglas reached to start the inning when his ground ball to third rolled under the glove of Mike Fisher. Familia walked Justin Henry and allowed a one-out single to Rawley Bishop to load the bases. After striking out Bryan Holaday, he got John Murrian to whiff at a fastball in the dirt. Unfortunately, the third strike skipped to the backstop and Douglas scored from third for the first run of the game.
Binghamton struck back with a two-out rally in the fourth. After Erie starter Jay Voss retired eleven straight B-Mets to start the game, Reese Havens battled in an eight-pitch at-bat and earned a two-out walk The free pass came back to bite Voss when Brahiam Maldonado blasted his team-leading 28th home run over the left-centerfield fence. The home run gave Binghamton a 2-1 lead.
The lead disappeared in the bottom of the fourth. Brent Wyatt led-off with a single and Jamie Johnson followed with a bunt single up the third base line. Brandon Douglas dropped a bunt near the mound. Familia fielded cleanly, but his throw to first was off target and skipped away from Eric Campbell. Wyatt tried scoring from second, but was gunned down when second baseman Jon Malo fired home to maintain the lead.
Erie eventually took advantage of Binghamton's shaky defense. With Justin Henry at the plate, Douglas broke for second. Ryan's throw was on the money, but Malo muffed the throw and the ball bounced into centerfield. Johnson came home on the misplay to tie the game at two.
Eric Campbell got the lead back for Binghamton with one swing. The first baseman sent his fourth homer of the year deep over the left-centerfield fence to lead-off the fifth. Dusty Ryan followed with a single, moved to second on Niuman Romero's single, advanced to third on Malo's fly out, and scored on Matt den Dekker's sac fly.
Familia capped his night with a perfect fifth and handed off to Erik Turgeon for the sixth. The righty retired the side in order, but fell into trouble in the seventh when he walked lead-off hitter Douglas. Justin Henry laced a single to right that scored Douglas when Lagares' throw to third skipped away from Fisher. Henry came home a batter later when Pounds singled up the middle to tie the game at four.
Brad Holt replaced Turgeon, walked the first man he faced, but escaped unscathed when John Murrian flied out to end the seventh. Holt returned for the eighth and worked a perfect inning to preserve the tie game.
For the second straight night, the B-Mets broke through in the ninth. Reliever Austin Wood had taken over for starter Voss in the eighth inning. He retired the first four he faced before Campbell singled up the middle in the final frame. Dusty Ryan stepped to the plate and ripped a 3-1 offering over the left field wall to break a tie game. Ryan's blast, his fifth as a B-Met, was the third homer of the game for Binghamton.
Rhiner Cruz entered in the ninth and walked lead-off hitter Douglas, who eventually scored on a ground out by Bryan Pounds. The run proved inconsequential when Rawley Bishop struck out to end the game. Cruz's seventh save of the year made a winner of Holt for the second straight night. Wood suffered his fifth loss.
The B-Mets (64-73) complete their final roadtrip of the season against the Erie SeaWolves tomorrow night at 7:05pm. RHP Collin McHugh (7-2, 3.09) will take the mound against LHP Drew Smyly (4-2, 1.23). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:50pm on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
