Buffalo Bisons News Release

Alex Hassan thought he broke out of his offensive slump in heroic fashion on Tuesday night. But much to his chagrin, Lehigh Valley's Jordan Danks had a few heroics himself

The Bisons were defeated by the IronPigs, 5-4, on Tuesday night after entering the ninth inning with a 4-3 lead during the first of a three-game series at Coca-Cola Field. Danks hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning to give Lehigh Valley the win and overshadow Hassan's four-RBI night.

"Hassan coming back from a hamstring issue there and did a great job," said manager Gary Allenson. "He drove in all four [runs]. Hague has carried us on our back for most of the season. It's time for some other guys to contribute, driving in runs. It was nice to see Hassan do that tonight."

Hassan hit .143 in his previous nine games played before Tuesday's matchup, and was sidelined due to a hamstring injury since June 15. Hassan finally broke out of his slump, going 2-for-3 with four RBI in the game. His biggest hit came in the eighth inning - a double that scored two runs to tentatively put Buffalo in the lead, 4-3.

In the ninth inning, Bobby Korecky gave up the home run to Danks to put Lehigh Valley up by one run heading into the bottom of the inning. Korecky finished the inning, but surrendered three hits on two earned runs in his fourth loss of the season.

Buffalo couldn't regain momentum in the bottom of the frame, ending the game on a Hague groundout.

Randy Wolf pitched a commendable game, going 7.2 innings, and gave up six hits, three earned runs and accumulated seven strikeouts. His only blemishes before the eighth inning was an RBI-single in the first inning and a solo home run in the seventh inning. Other than that, the southpaw was virtually unhittable. Between the second and sixth inning, Wolf recorded four 1-2-3 innings and faced the minimum 15 batters in that stretch.

Wolf allowed three hits and a walk in the seventh inning, which included the go-ahead run that put Lehigh Valley up 3-2.

"I thought he was good to go for another inning, but walking the first guy obviously, maybe he wasn't there," Allenson said. "It seemed like he had everyone off-balance. His pitch count was much better than it has been in the past. It just didn't work out."

The Bisons took the early advantage, and it was heads-up baseball that kept them in the game.

Buffalo left 15 runners on base, a point that Allenson plans to address at the seasons' mid-way point. Buffalo is currently 7.5 games out of first place in the division and offense is one of the main concerns. Allenson believes the starting pitching is there, but offense needs to respond as well.

"It's time for the '2-for-11 with runners in scoring position' to end," Allenson said. "We've wasted too many good starts from pitchers."

The Herd will continue its three-game series with Lehigh Valley on Wednesday with a start time at 7:05 p.m.
