Toledo Mud Hens News Release

After a mutual off day, the Mud Hens took their act on the road to face off against Int. South foe, the Durham Bulls in the first game of the series Tuesday night in North Carolina. The cross division rivals had two different approaches on the mound as the Hens decided to throw their entire bullpen into the mix from the get go, pitching by committee and starting Mevlin Mercedes on the bump. On the other hand for Durham, it was Everett Teaford toeing the slab for the Bulls, looking to earn his fifth win of the season.

The Toledo offense wasted no time in putting some runs up on the board against the starter Teaford, as Jefry Marte slugged his ninth home run into the seats in the top of the first scoring Xavier Avery and putting the Hens up 2-0. Mike Hessman would join the long ball club in the sixth as well, sending another Teaford offering over the wall for his ninth jack of the year. Marte finished 3 for 5 at the dish with 2 RBI on the evening.

The majority of the Durham offense came off of Hens' reliever Josh Zeid in the 4th and 5th as a wild pitch and a double allowed the Bulls' offense to creep back within striking distance, trailing 4-3. In the bottom of the sixth, a deep sac fly sent to right field by Ryan Brett was good enough to bring across Richie Shaffer and knot the game at four a piece.

Both bullpens dominated in innings seven through nine, sending the game into extras as the offenses tried to piece together any type of threat. In the eleventh, it was Durham's Richie Shaffer doubling on a fly ball to right field to get the inning started off of Hens' reliever Angel Nesbitt. Nesbitt would get Vince Belnome to pop up , however Shaffer advanced to third on the play and Hak-Ju Lee brought around Shaffer on the next at bat with a shallow fly ball just out of Mike Hessman's reach at third for the game winner. Lee finished 2 for 5 with the game winning RBI.

The two teams are back in action Wednesday afternoon for a 1:05 pm start in Durham. Thad Weber toes the rubber for Toledo looking for his fifth win of the season.
