Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD - Seven innings was enough for the Williamsport Crosscutters to score eight runs off of Aberdeen IronBirds pitching Saturday evening at Ripken Stadium. The IronBirds fell to the Crosscutters 8-2 in a rain-shortened seven-inning game.
Matt Hobgood got the start for the IronBirds and struggled. Pete Lavin and Kyrell Hudson started off the first with back-to-back singles. Bob Stumpo worked a walk to load the bases. Hobgood hit Aaron Altherr with a pitch, scoring Lavin. Harold Martinez then grounded a ball to short. Mychal Givens flipped to Austin Knight at second for one out. Knight attempted to complete the double-play but threw the ball wildly to first. Two runs scored on the play. Brock Stassi and Taylor Black reached on walks, loading the bases back up. Hobgood threw a wild pitch, allowing Martinez to score and making it 4-0.
Williamsport knocked Hobgood out of the game in the second inning. Hobgood walked the leadoff man Lavin. He stole second. Lavin advanced to third on a ground-out. With the infield drawn-in, Stumpo hit a sharp ground ball right at Givens. He couldn't play it cleanly, allowing Stumpo to reach and Lavin to score. Hobgood would then hit Altherr with a pitch before being taken out of the game.
Hobgood surrendered six runs - four earned - on two hits. He walked four and hit two batters while striking out one.
The Crosscutters weren't done in the second inning. Stassi hit a ground-ball to the right side with two men down. Knight fielded at second but threw wildly to first. It was ruled an infield-hit and an error, as Stumpo scored from second making it 6-0.
Aberdeen got on the scoreboard with two men down in the fifth. After loading the bases, Connor Narron hit a two-run single to the left-side.
Williamsport tacked on a seventh run in the sixth inning. Hudson led off the inning with a double. Two batters later, Martinez knocked him in with a double.
The Crosscutters struck again in the eighth. With two on and two out, Hudson hit an RBI-double making it 8-2.
With two on and nobody out in the eighth, the rain began to fall again, ending the game.
Bryan Morgado (1-3) got the win. He surrendered two runs, both earned, on five hits in five innings of work. Hobgood (0-4) took the loss.
The IronBirds and the Crosscutters will meet in the finale of this three-game series on Sunday evening at Ripken Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 PM. It's the IronBirds' final game before the all-star break.
