Sixth Inning Too Much for Auburn in 5-0 Defeat

Auburn Doubledays News Release

Staten Island, NY - Four sixth inning runs scored against Auburn reliever Richie Mirowski were too much for the Auburn Doubledays to come back from on Saturday night in a 5-0 final at Richmond County Bank Ballpark in Staten Island, New York.

Despite struggling offensively, managing only two hits through the first five innings, the Doubledays still found themselves very much in the middle of a game against the league's best team. Brian Dupra had held the Yankees in check for most of the night, giving up just three hits and one run in five innings, striking out five.

He handed the ball to Richie Mirowski in the sixth, who had been the Doubledays best reliever out of the bullpen on the year, boasting a 1.47 ERA. This time though, Mirowski didn't have his best stuff.

Ben Gamel led off the sixth inning by tripling to deep right-center field, giving the Yankees an early run-scoring threat. After a strikeout and a walk, Gamel scored the second run of the night on a wild pitch by Mirowski, making it 2-0 Yankees.

After another walk issued by Mirowski, Zach Wilson singled in a run and Jhorge Liccien followed with a two-run double, giving the Yankees their fourth run of the inning and fifth of the game. Liccien ended the inning by getting thrown out at third, trying to advance on the relay throw home.

Auburn could never find their groove offensively on the night, finding just four hits and one extra-base hit, a double by Russell Moldenhauer in the eighth. One night after pounding out 12 runs and 14 hits, the Doubledays were held scoreless.

The good news on the night for Auburn was that Mahoning Valley also lost, 2-1 to the Brooklyn Cyclones, keeping the Doubledays a game in front of the Scrappers in the New York-Penn League's Pinckney Division. Williamsport, who defeated Aberdeen 8-2 on Saturday, is now half-game behind Auburn in the division.

Even with an off night at the ballpark on Saturday by the Doubledays, all could be erased Sunday when they face Staten Island for the final game of the three-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 4pm at Raymond County Bank Stadium, with the Doubledays pre-game show going live at 3:45pm on 89.1 FM and at www.auburndoubledays.com.
