-SPIKES MEET TIGERS FOR MIDDLE GAME OF SERIES: The State College Spikes continue the back half of a six-game homestand at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park tonight as they play the second game of a three-game series against the Connecticut Tigers. State College is 6-10 against the Tigers all-time stretching back to their time in Oneonta, which ended in 2008.
-LAST GAME: The State College Spikes received a dominant start on the mound from Matt Benedict for the first five innings, but the Connecticut Tigers used a pair of two-run innings to nudge past the Spikes and take a 4-1 decision on Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Benedict was superb through his five frames on the mound, allowing just three hits and a walk while hitting one batter and striking out five. The strikeout total was a new career best for the Pirates' 30th-round choice in the 2011 draft.
-HAFNER LOOKS FOR ANOTHER QUALITY START: Right-hander Ryan Hafner gets the ball for State College tonight. The Lee's Summit, MO native was the Pirates' 17th-round draft choice in 2010. Hafner threw six two-hit, shutout innings against Jamestown last time out. The righty's 2.74 ERA would place ninth in the NYPL without the minimum innings requirement.
-COLLIER STARTS FOR TIGERS TONIGHT: Connecticut right-hander Tommy Collier makes his fourth start of the year tonight for the Tigers. Collier, the Tigers' 22nd-round draft pick in 2011 out of San Jacinto (TX) College North, has gone at least 4 1/3 innings in each of his first three starts. Collier took the loss at Lowell last time out after yiedling four runs on eight hits.
-FREEMAN ALSO NAMED TO NYPL ALL-STAR GAME: Spikes outfielder Wes Freeman was named to the 2011 New York-Penn League All-Star Game Thursday. Freeman joins catcher Samuel Gonzalez and outfielder Carlos Mesa have each been named to the National League squad for Tuesday's contest in Lowell. Mesa will not play due to injury.
