IronBirds Fall by One Again

June 22, 2014 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen, MD- The IronBirds dropped another close one as they lost the final game of their three-game series with the Brooklyn Cyclones 2-1, dropping them to 1-9 on the season. This loss marks the eighth time the IronBirds have lost by one run.

LHP Augey Bill got the start for the IronBirds, it was his second start of the season. CF Tucker Tharp got a lead off single into right field, and when SS Amed Rosario was up to bat, Tharp stole second. Rosario then hit a single into left field, allowing Tharp to safely make it to third. Up next was DH Tomas Nido who grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, but Tharp was able to make it home to give the Cyclones the early lead.

Hitting was an issue for the IronBirds in the second game of the series as they only managed to get five hits total, but in this game their bats got going early. LF Hernandez hit a one out single to the corner of right field, and then DH Alex Murphy got a single up the center of the field, stretching his hitting streak to six games, and moving Hernandez to second. Veloz then grounded into a double play but the inning did show an improvement from last night.

After a scoreless second inning and holding the Cyclones off in the top of the third, the IronBirds got on the board in the bottom of the inning. SS Byron Capellan hit a grounder to third and was able to beat the throw. Up next was 2B Steve Wilkerson who hit a single that dropped in between second and right field, pushing Capellan to second. Then Herndandez stepped up and hit a single into shallow right field to load up the bases with only one out. Up stepped Murphy who hit a sac fly to right field that scored Capellan. That would be the last run that the IronBirds scored.

The Cyclones answered at the top of the fourth thanks to a solo home run from RF Michael Bernal, giving them the 2-1 lead that they would never relinquish as neither team was able to score again after that.

Cyclones LHP Carlos Valdez (1-0) got the win while Bill (0-1) took the loss. RHP Gaither Bumgardner earned the save.

This loss puts the IronBirds at 1-9 on the season and places them fourth in the McNamara division of the NY-Penn League; they're seven games back on the first place, 8-2 Cyclones.

Tomorrow night the IronBirds host the Staten Island Yankees for the first game of their two-game series.
