Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
State College, PA - After scoring just one run on four hits in the first nine innings of Wednesday night's game against the State College Spikes, the Aberdeen IronBirds sent 10 batters to the plate in the 10th inning. The four-run extra frame propelled the IronBirds to a 5-1 win over the Spikes.
The IronBirds wasted no time to get on the scoreboard. With one man out in the first, Sammie Starr singled to center field. Mychal Givens hit a line drive into right field. Junior Sosa dove for the ball and missed it. Starr scored from first on what ended up being an RBI-triple.
State College tied the game in the third inning. Ashley Ponce worked a leadoff walk. With two outs, Wes Freeman hit an RBI-triple to the center field wall, tying the game at one.
Aberdeen starting pitcher Tyler Wilson exited the game after the fifth. He surrendered just one run on three hits in five innings of work.
The game stayed tied at one until the top of the 10th. Austin Goolsby led the inning off with a double. Adam Davis knocked him in with an RBI-double. After Kyle Hoppy walked, Martin Serrata hit an RBI-single. With runners on the corners, Glynn Davis laid down a squeeze bunt. It scored Hoppy from third. The pitcher Jesus Brito threw the ball wildly to first, allowing Serrata and Davis to move up to third and second respectively. A batter later, Givens was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Joe Velleggia. He worked a walk, knocking in the fourth run of the inning and making it 5-1.
Enrico Jimenez (3-1) pitched a perfect ninth to get his third win. Jesus Brito (0-1) surrendered all four 10th inning runs on the way to his first loss of the season.
The IronBirds and the Spikes will meet in the rubber match of the three-game series on Thursday evening in State College. The IronBirds will have All-Star left-handed pitcher Trent Howard (3-1, 2.78) on the hill. He'll go up against right-hander Trent Stevenson (0-1, 5.25). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
