August 10, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD - The New York-Penn League announced today that Aberdeen IronBirds fan Caleb Dorsch will receive a $250 book award as part of the 2011 NYPL Scholarship Program. He will be honored prior to the IronBirds' home game on August 24th against the Connecticut Tigers.
The New York-Penn League once again awarded over $10,000 in scholarships in 2011 to deserving high school graduates from the league's 14 markets.
Here are this year's winners of $2,500 scholarships:
PINCKNEY - Carly Conklin (Mahoning Valley)
STEDLER - Kyle Thweatt (Vermont)
McNAMARA - Andrea Moore (Staten Island)
Here are the 11 finalists who received $250 for books:
Caleb Dorsch, Aberdeen
Tyler Fischetti, Auburn
Philip Casper, Batavia
Liza Acevedo, Brooklyn
Trevor Turgeon, Connecticut
Thomas Fleischman, Hudson Valley
Nathan Ditonto, Jamestown
James Thyne, Lowell
Nick Carothers, State College
Brandon Galgay, Tri-City
Matt Marzzacco, Williamsport
The 2011 NYPL Scholarship Program was open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school within the league's footprint, who has been accepted at any two or four-year college or university, vocational or technical education institution. Applicants were judged on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and the impact their local NYPL club and Minor League baseball has had on their lives.
The program consisted of two stages - a local round and a divisional round. In the local stage, students applied directly with their local NYPL team, with one applicant chosen by each of the 14 teams to advance to the divisional round. The 14 finalists were separated by the division of the team they represented. The winning application from each of the NYPL's three divisions (McNamara, Pinckney and Stedler) received the top prize of a $2,500 scholarship. All other finalists received a $250 book award.
Dorsch will be honored before the IronBirds' August 24th game at Ripken Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
The Aberdeen IronBirds sold out season tickets for the 10th straight season. Group packages and single-game tickets, however, are still available for the 2011 season. For ticket information, contact our box office at (410) 297-9292 or visit us online at www.IronBirdsbaseball.com.
